- (Hawkins, Edward). Anglo-Gallic Coins in the Collection of Sir Charles Frederick, Knight of the Bath. (London, c. 1830). 8vo, contemporary red straight-grained morocco, gilt; spine with five raised bands, ruled, lettered and decorated in gilt; all board edges and turn-ins decorated in gilt; marbled endpapers. (2), 29 leaves, ruled neatly, on which have been mounted engravings of 69 Anglo-Gallic coins, with annotations in the hand of Edward Hawkins. Coins depicted are mostly from the collection of Charles Frederick but also include some based on published illustrations that subsequently proved apocryphal. Frederick (1709-1785) had commissioned a series of engravings of these coins, discussed by Hawkins (1780-1867) in his introduction to the British Museum catalogue of the Anglo-Gallic coinage. Full-page advertisement illustrating both sides of approximately 50 different coins, captioned: "These are a few of the Illustrations of Rare and Valuable Coins for which a high premium is paid. Description, market value, and full history of these and many other more (also illustrated) can be found in our work on Coins and their History." Ad measures 46 by 30 cm; in modern frame measuring 60 by 46 cm. Source unknown. A modern label jokingly reads, "Flyer Distributed at EARLY AMERICAN COPPERS 1885 Philadelphia Convention." Very good. - [Hartford, Connecticut]. A Register of Bills / Decr. 16th AD 1812. (Hartford, 1812-1817). Four sheets of 33 by 38 cm plain paper folded and stitched to form eight leaves measuring 19 by 33 cm, the whole sewn into paper covers formed from two sheets of a newspaper. Title taken from opening inscription on first leaf; short title also written on front cover. All 16 resulting pages are covered with a handwritten register recording all paper money received by a merchant from Dec. 16, 1812, to Jan. 15, 1817. Most entries record the date of receipt, a basic description of the note, and from whom it was received, to protect against charges of passing a counterfeit bill. Script is reasonably neat and the paper is of good quality. Very good, overall. Estimate $300. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society.
