- 19th Century Miner's Scale Trio, Good to Very Good. The first item is a two-pan balance American mining scale, housed in a black leather rectangular box with plush maroon interior, and a covered weight compartment containing eight small weights in dwt. increments. The leather cover features a gold embossed American Eagle with shield and the case contains a handwritten note, from Eric P. Newman, describing the scale and box. The gilt decorations have faded, and the leather cover is cracked in some areas. The second item is a duplicate of the first, except the weight compartment only contains three weights and the note inside reads simply "DUPLICATE." The third item is a smaller version of the same scale, housed in a smaller rectangular box with a similar leather cover and plush-lined interior. The cover displays the same gold embossed American eagle with shield design, but the weight compartment is uncovered, and no weights are included. The leather cover is in better condition and the cover design is less faded. Approximate dimensions (varies): 7.0 x 3.0 x 1.0 inches. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society. Heritage Auctions 11/2018 (Newman XI), lot15696 (realized $144). Heritage link: http://www.ha.com/c/item.zx?saleNo=1283&lotIdNo=11641

- Several Counterfeit Detectors. Fine to Very Fine. The first item is a set of three 6-inch popsicle stick rocker balances for testing U.S. copper cents (1982 and earlier), versus U.S. copper-plated zinc cents (1982 and later). One copper cent and one copper-plated zinc cent accompany the scale in a plastic flip, for testing. The second item is a nine-slot nickel rocker balance with a black cast iron base, mounted on a wooden stand, along with a small plumb bob suspended from a metal arch. U.S. COIN SCALE/31 BROAD ST. N.Y. is inscribed on the rocker. The balance could be used to check the diameter, thickness, and weight of U.S. silver and gold coins of all denominations from 25 cents to 20 dollars. A small metal container holds two examples of the often-missing gold dollar counterweights for the balance. The overall dimensions are approximately 9 x 3.5 x 2.7 inches. The third item is a DRI MARK Counterfeit Money Detector pen, still in the original cardboard and plastic holder. The pen is used to detect counterfeit bills. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society. Heritage Auctions 11/2018 (Newman XI), lot15693 (realized $528). Heritage link: http://www.ha.com/c/item.zx?saleNo=1283&lotIdNo=11638

- Six Counterfeit Coin Detectors of Various Designs. Very Good to Fine. The first item is an ingenious circular coin gauge by John W. Sutton, small enough to carry as a pocket piece. Several slots are cut into the device for different coin denominations. Working on a fulcrum provided by the owner, a coin that balances in the appropriate slot is valid. Patented in 1877. The second item is a small case inscribed Clark's Coin Tester, U.S. Standard, PAT MAR.6.83. The device includes four slots for checking the thickness and diameter of quarters, half dollars, silver dollars, and half eagles. The third item is another Clark's coin tester, without the inscriptions on the case, and slots for checking quarter eagles, half eagles, eagles, and double eagles. The fourth item is a brass beam with four slots and four brackets, inscribed J.A. THOMPSON'S INSTANTANEOUS COUNTERFEIT DETECTOR PAT. APl. 3, 77. The slots were for checking the thickness and diameter of U.S. silver coins in all denominations from dime to half dollar (including the 20 cent piece). The brackets were designed to hold the coins at the appropriate distance from the fulcrum so that a genuine coin would balance. The fifth item is an unlabeled rocker scale with a red rectangular base. The final item is inscribed DAVEGA'S/COIN/TESTER/ PAT. APPLd FOR, with a copper base and nickel rocker beam with two unlabeled pans. A note from Eric P. Newman indicates it was acquired in 1989 from Gorlick. Dimensions of these items vary. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society. Heritage Auctions 11/2018 (Newman XI), lot15691 (realized $24000). Heritage link: http://www.ha.com/c/item.zx?saleNo=1283&lotIdNo=11673
