- Trio of Nickel Rocker U.S. Gold and Silver Counterfeit Coin Detector Scales. Very Good to Fine. The first item is a Fairbanks & Co. nickel rocker scale with nine slots for checking the thickness, diameter, and weight of all U.S. silver and gold coin denominations from quarter to double eagle. Mounted on a wooden base with fully rounded ends. A short descriptive note on a circular tag, written by Eric P. Newman, indicates this was McNally's patent. Missing the gold dollar counterweight. The second item is another Fairbanks & Co. nine-slot nickel rocker scale, this one mounted on a black cast iron base. PAT. FEB. 28, 82 is inscribed on the top of the counterweight, with W.G. LANG/BROOKLYN underneath. A short descriptive note in Eric's handwriting indicates this was also McNally's patent. Missing the gold dollar counterweight. The third item is another nine-slot nickel rocker scale, mounted on a wooden base. J.T. McNALLY/INVENTOR is inscribed on the beam. The often-missing gold dollar counterweight is present, taped in its hole in the wooden base. A short descriptive note on a circular tag, presumably from Newman, accompanies the scale. The larger detectors measure approximately 9 x 2.5 x 1.7 inches. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society. Heritage Auctions 11/2018 (Newman XI), lot15675 (realized $432). - Four Berrian Counterfeit Coin Detectors. Fine to Very Fine. All four items are nickel rocker scales that measure 9.5 x 2 x 0.5 inches, with a hole in the flat (non-slotted) side and slots for checking the weight, diameter, and thickness of all denominations of U.S. gold and silver coins from 25 cents to 20 dollars. All are inscribed Gold and Silver Counterfeit Coin Detector/Pat'd Feb. 27, 1877/U.S. Standard/Berrian M'F'G Co. N.Y. The first scale is in Very Fine condition, and includes marked postage increments from half ounce to two ounces for weighing letters, in addition to the usual coin slots. The second scale also includes both coin and postage measurements, and is the only known Berrian scale with a separate movable letter clip to hold a letter in place while weighing. A descriptive note from Eric P. Newman accompanies the scale. The third scale is similar to the others in all respects, except that it does not have the postage increments for weighing letters. The fourth scale has all the usual inscriptions and is slotted and marked for weighing both coins and letters, with a red number 19 pasted to the bottom. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society. Heritage Auctions 11/2018 (Newman XI), lot15670 (realized $1680). Heritage link: http://www.ha.com/c/item.zx?saleNo=1283&lotIdNo=11662
