- Rare (1811-15) Planters Bank Countermark Stamped on a Spanish Cut Silver PiecePoor 1 is the grade of the host coin; NGC has determined an XF grade for the counterstamp. Cut pieces of Spanish and Spanish-American 8 reales circulated widely in the early 1800s. The lack of federal small change forced New Orleans-based Planters Bank to counterstamp pieces of cut coinage as a means of verifying weight and authenticity. This example shows a partial P.B. countermark on the obverse, while the NOUVELLE ORLEANS / eagle reverse mark is incomplete and shows damage. A second countermark says "Bad" (also a Planters Bank mark) to indicate the piece was substandard. Years later, Planters Bank gathered together all of the cut pieces they could find and shipped them to the Philadelphia Mint, where they were melted for bullion. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society. Heritage Auctions 11/2018 (Newman XI), lot15049 (realized $5040). Heritage link: http://www.ha.com/c/item.zx?saleNo=1283&lotIdNo=11828

- (1811-15) Planters Bank Countermark Fair Host, VF CountermarksThis is a second example of the Planters Bank countermark applied to a well-worn, cut 8 reales piece. The P.B. countermark is classified as a Hard Times token (HT-124), but it is more accurately an early American piece from the 1811 to 1815 period. The Brunk reference identifies several die varieties used by Planters Bank a means of "regulating" cut coinage in local circulation. This example has an especially well-struck P.B. countermark on the obverse, while the NOUVELLE ORLEANS / eagle reverse mark is less deeply applied and more worn. The eagle's head is under V of NOUVELLE to identify the variety. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society. Heritage Auctions 11/2018 (Newman XI), lot15048 (realized $5520). - (1811-15) Planters Bank Countermark Fine 12 Host, VF CountermarksCirculating small change was in critically short supply throughout the South in the early 1800s, when cut "two bits" pieces served as a stop-gap solution, taking the place of U.S. quarter dollars. In particular, Planters Bank of New Orleans was in dire need of quarters. Existing crenate (scalloped) segments cut from 8 reales were removed from circulation and verified by the bank as an anti-counterfeiting measure. Circular countermarks were struck on both the obverse and reverse - an elaborate script P.B. within a chain-link circle on the obverse, and NOUVELLE ORLEANS surrounding an eagle on the reverse (eagle's head under V). In subsequent years, Planters Bank supplied large shipments of bullion to the Philadelphia Mint in exchange for freshly minted federal quarters dated 1815 and 1825. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society. Heritage Auctions 11/2018 (Newman XI), lot15047 (realized $10200). Heritage link: http://www.ha.com/c/item.zx?saleNo=1283&lotIdNo=11852

- '1776' Washington - Franklin Mint Medal Beaver Reverse, Engraved by John Reich MS64 Red and Brown, Julian CM-4Bronze, plain edge, 40 mm. An early American effort by noted engraver John Reich, whose redesign of U.S. coinage soon followed. Julian CM-4 through CM-8 are often called Sansom medals, since their issue was sponsored by Philadelphia businessman Joseph Sansom. The dies were finished in 1805, but intermittent strikes continued some years thereafter. The obverse presents half-length busts left of George Washington and Benjamin Franklin. The busts overlap, with Washington in front. The reverse depicts an American beaver gnawing through a British oak tree. A splendid near-Gem of this expertly engraved high-relief variety. Well struck, mark-free, and with ample faded peach-gold color. The portrait high-points are steel-gray. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society. Heritage Auctions 11/2018 (Newman XI), lot15046 (realized $5520). Heritage link: http://www.ha.com/c/item.zx?saleNo=1283&lotIdNo=11738
