- Westport, MA - Town of Westport, Payable by the Cashier, Merchants Bank, New Bedford 25 Cents Dec. 1, 1862. PCGS Very Fine 20 Apparent. An extremely rare and desirable coastal Massachusetts scrip note, and the first we have seen. The key to the note's identification is its tie to the Merchants Bank, New Bedford and payable with that cashier, which is noted in fine text at the top. Typeset on white paper with TOWN OF WESTPORT at each end within pattern borders. Only some "Stains" are noted, but this consists of some minor foxing. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society, Heritage Auctions Internet Sale (5/2016). (Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions, ha.com.) Realized $89.00
