- Little Rock, AR - State of Arkansas-Arkansas Treasury Warrant $1 Dec. 5, 1861 Cr. UNL, Rothert 375-1var. PCGS Fine 12 Apparent. The early 1861 Arkansas Treasury Notes are scarce and have variants that should be considered technically unlisted. This is printed on thick brown paper, but has a plate style like the Cr.1B. At the left end, common to the 1861 series notes, is a Native American princess peering into the distance. Noted are "Edge and Internal Splits; Hinge Repairs on Back." A presentable example overall and underrated. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society, Heritage Auctions Internet Sale (5/2016). (Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions, ha.com.) Realized $79.00

- Lewisburg, AR - D. V. Henry Confederate States Sutler of First Arkansas Mounted Rifles 10 Cents Feb. 7, 1862 Rothert 366-1, Keller AR-SA010. PCGS Very Fine 20 Apparent. This historic and gallantly titled sutler note is likely unique. Plated in Rothert and Keller, and the missing ten percent of the right end of the note does not diminish its importance. Printed on white paper. Texts and titles are in the right center. The left end panel shows a perpendicular train in oval. Payable in "...[Camp] Bragg or Lewisburg." Most of the signature is visible. The First was originally formed in Little Rock in June 16, 1861 and was composed of companies A-K. They fought in important, early Western Theatre engagements such as Wilson's Creek, and later in the year were sent to the Indian Territory to engage pro-Union Cherokees. Early in 1862 they were involved in the Battle of Pea Ridge directed by the officers of the Army of the West. The First Arkansas Mounted Rifles was not a Confederate Cavalry unit for long, as they were dismounted by the middle of 1862. There was tremendous reorganization of Confederate forces at that time and Arkansas enlistments were adjusted as well. They fought through the War and eventually surrendered in North Carolina in April 1865 as part of the Army of Tennessee. Noted are "Pieces Missing; Tape Repaired Edge Splits" by grading. Despite some flaws, we expect the tremendous interest we have seen for all Newman Collection sutler notes. The next collector becomes a caretaker of a fascinating relic of Arkansas Civil War history. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society, Heritage Auctions Internet Sale (5/2016). (Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions, ha.com.) Realized $2350.00

- Helena, AR - Levee Treasurer of Phillips County $1000 8% Levee Scrip July 20, 1861 Rothert 278-3. PCGS Very Fine 30 Apparent. Another very rare Arkansas scrip note issue and the only $1,000 note from the state. Printed on a rather brittle white paper. The light red undertint protector "1000" dominates the center under the complex obligation. The left end panel shows an interesting Native American princess in the center that mimics the U.S. $3 gold piece and Type III gold dollars. Due to the brittle paper, there are noted "Tape Repaired Edge Splits and Tears," with some minor foxing seen on the face. The first we have handled, with the Rothert plate note sold from the Western Reserve Collection (part of lot 163 in the November, 1996 Spink America [Christie's] sale). Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society, Heritage Auctions Internet Sale (5/2016). (Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions, ha.com.) Realized $329.00

- Helena, AR - County of Phillips $1 187_ Rothert 277-1. PCGS Very Good 10 Apparent. Fully issued, and a rare Reconstruction era scrip note with a Federal style note back. The note has conflicting obligations between the face and back. From the face plate, the note was payable "One year after date" at "3 percent per annum from maturity." However, the back medallion obligation has the text "Redeemable in U. S. Currency without interest." Known examples were also payable "Two years after..." Boldly designed and printed by the National Bank Note Company with green face bordering and guilloche. The center shows a rare vignette of workers moving a heavy boulder. The brown security back is similar to period Federal notes. In typical condition for the series with noted "Repairs; Pieces replaced; Design Redrawn." This is an intriguing series that deserves additional face plate variety study. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society, Heritage Auctions Internet Sale (5/2016). (Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions, ha.com.) Realized $188.00
