- Wetumpka, Al - Wetumpka Trading Co. of the State of Alabama $20 Post Note Dec. 13, 1838 AL-115 G14, Rosene 357-8. PCGS Very Fine 25 Apparent. This is from a series of notes with deceptively engraved titles showing the prominent "State of Alabama" at center, despite any government sanction. This classical Rawdon, Wright & Hatch note has seated Justice on a wharf at top center flanked by "XX" dies. A POST NOTE panel is at the left end. Written payable "Four" Months after date. - Selma, AL - Commercial Bank of Alabama $50 June 25, 1856 Al-85 G14a, Rosene 294-6. PCGS Fine 15. The second highest denomination Toppan, Carpenter & Co. engraved note from the bank, with a vermillion color back. At bottom center are seated Justice and Plenty. The left end shows a sailor and Plenty. At lower right is an oval portrait of Weaver used on this series. The back style is similar to the $20 from the series. The second highest denomination Toppan, Carpenter & Co. engraved note from the bank, with a vermillion color back. At bottom center are seated Justice and Plenty. A higher denomination Toppan, Carpenter & Co. engraved Commercial Bank note, which differs from the low denominations by having a vermillion color back. An intricate wharf scene is at the right end, with Norris portrait to the left. At lower left is group of Continental soldiers, one drumming. The back is composed of ornate dies and the title in the center. Another bold example from the bank, and an attractive note. Ex: Eric P. The portrait of King at the center is flanked by bank president William J. Norris at left and businessman Philip J. Weaver at right. The placement of red "3" protectors in the bottom corners is interesting. There are some "Small Repairs; Minor Rust Stains" noted. Ex: Eric P. At the center is large portrait of William King, engraved for the series. King was a U.S. Senator, ambassador to France and Vice President with Franklin Pierce (but died in office in 1853). - Montgomery, AL - Farmers Bank of Alabama $5 July 8, 1862 AL-70 G8a, Rosene 237-2. PCGS Very Fine 30. An extremely well-margined example of this bank type printed by Jules Manouvrier in New Orleans. At the center are agricultural and trade items, with a green FIVE protector slightly overlapping. This was a registered series and has a state comptroller signature at the left.
