- Huntsville, AL - Bank of the State of Alabama at Huntsville $5 Post Note Jan. 1, 1836 AL-5-G152 SENC Rosene 3-UNL. PCGS Fine Very Fine 20 Apparent. An exceptionally important and interesting note on several levels. Not only is it an extremely rare type from the Huntsville branch, it was also payable at the Bank of Louisiana in New Orleans. This is a beautifully engraved note by Draper, Toppan, Longacre & Co. Aurora, seated in a chariot at the top center, is cupped into the title. Upper corner vignettes represent Industry at the left and Agriculture at the right. Showing sharp pen signatures and issued to be paid "Ninety" days after date. A solid note with only some "Minor Stains" in the center noted. We have sold just one proof of this branch denomination design type, but never an issued note with this style. A key Alabama tie note type that will appeal to collectors from both states. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society, Heritage Auctions Internet Sale (5/2016). (Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions, ha.com.) Realized $7637.50

The top center shows a train heading west over the title. At the left is Ceres with her scythe. A vibrant green ONE protector is at bottom center. Printed in New Orleans by Pesson & Simon. A bright example with some noted "Small Edge Tears." Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society, Heritage Auctions Internet Sale (5/2016). (Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions, ha.com.) Realized $399.50

- Florence, AL - Hancock & Jones 5 Cents Jan. 1, 1862 Rosene-UNL. PCGS Very Fine 20 Apparent. Another great rarity from the Newman Collection and only the second example from the issuer we have encountered. A bright note overall and simply typeset. The top line shows "Change (5) Ticket." The signature is strong. The Rosene plate note is a 50 cents note from the Walter B. Jones Collection; we sold it in September 2001 for $330.00. That is ancient history for rarities like this, and there was strong demand for the few Florence scrip notes we sold in January 2016. The noted "Edge and Internal Splits; Stains" are modest considerations factored with its rarity. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society, Heritage Auctions Internet Sale (5/2016). (Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions, ha.com.) Realized $616.88

- Eufaula, AL - Eastern Bank of Alabama $1 March 15, 1860 AL-15 G2a, Rosene 68-1. PCGS Very Fine 25. A splendid late engraved American Bank Note Co. note with vermillion protector grill at the top and counter surrounds. The layout is quite pleasing and shows a man buying a newspaper from a boy in the center, a large cotton boll at the far left and a Federal style eagle (by Alfred Jones) at the far right. A bold example, plus this is from the much scarcer series than the higher denomination remainders. This note is certainly on par with the example we sold at the 2012 FUN sale for $431.25. Fully issued and bold for type. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society, Heritage Auctions Internet Sale (5/2016). (Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions, ha.com.) Realized $199.75

- Choctaw Corner, AL - Carleton & Slade 10 Cents Unknown (Early 1860s). Rosene-UNL. PCGS Fine 15 Apparent. This is a new Alabama note discovery from the Newman Collection. The town, nonexistent today (eventually absorbed in the 1880s by Thomasville), and issuer are unlisted in Rosene. Its style indicates the early Civil War period, but the date on the lower left and part of the bottom right signature are shaved off, perhaps as a cancellation of the note. The title across the center and a small steam ship vignette above it are within ornate end bordering. The obligation has a payable in "Confederate Treasury Notes" clause. Blank back with perpendicular endorsement: "Will F. Saltman/Indianapolis/March 21 18[??]." There are mentioned "Edge Splits and Tears; Pieces Missing" by grading. This might be unique, and Alabama Civil War scrip of this highest rarity has always been coveted. This was proven by our strong recent FUN 2016 auction results. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society, Heritage Auctions Internet Sale (5/2016). (Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions, ha.com.) Realized $822.50
