- Courtesy Autographed Fr. 1608 $1 1935A Silver Certificate. PCGS Choice About New 58PPQ. This is certainly one of the more unusual autographed notes we have ever been privileged to offer. Eric P. Newman obtained this note, as the letter included with the lot explains, from Mr. Tom K. Smith who was president of the Boatmen's National Bank of St. Louis. Apparently, Mr. Smith had told Eric that he could obtain a note with the courtesy autographs of Treasury officials W. A. Julian and Henry Morgenthau, Jr. When Mr. Smith was unable to obtain such an item, he sent Mr. Newman a $1 Silver Certificate, signed by Henry Morgenthau with the salutation "For Jane Smith" (presumably Mr. Smith's wife) and the date "June 23, 1939." This explanatory letter and the note have been encapsulated together in a special PCGS holder. A unique item from the Newman collection which will certainly be a highlight of the next collection it enters. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society, Heritage Auctions Internet Sale (5/2016). (Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions, ha.com.) Realized $383.05
