- Palmyra, MO - Bank of the State of Missouri $20 Aug. 12, 1853 Contemporary Counterfeit MO-60 C192a SENC. PCGS Fine 12 Apparent. Genuine notes from this bank with the Draper, Toppan, Longacre & Co. layout are rare. Palmyra branch contemporary counterfeits from the series are scarcer than similar ones from Fayette. The Haxby Design 20A plate style shows four corner portraits (Benton, Linn, Jackson, and van Buren going clockwise from upper left) and two allegorical women at top center. - St. Charles, MO - Southern Bank of St. Louis, Bank in St. St. Charles $5 Nov. 2, 1859 Contemporary Counterfeit MO-55 C26b. PCGS Very Fine 20 Apparent. Genuine notes from the bank are difficult to find, and this is a well-known counterfeit type. It copies the Toppan, Carpenter, Casilear & Co. with an "ABC" monogram at the bottom right edge. At the top center is steamboat. A male portrait is at the bottom left and Union at the lower right, but not showing the title on the column. A red protector FIVE is at the bottom. Crude details overall, particularly the portrait and the crooked color protector. Noted as "Stained; Edge Tear at Right; Minor Mounting Remnants on Back." However, this does face up nicely. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society, Heritage Auctions Internet Sale (5/2016). (Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions, ha.com.) Realized $105.75

- St. Louis, MO - Bank of St. Louis (2nd), Branch Payable at Kirksville $2 July 1, 1861 MO-50 G50a SENC. PCGS Very Good 10 Apparent. Another unregistered Civil War note (it did not have a countersignature on the face when emitted) beautifully rendered by the American Bank Note Co., Philadelphia imprint. This was also a Branch Payable type with an engraved line inserted in the obligation for the issued notes to be given a location for redemption. At the top center is the classic and dramatic engraving by Alfred Jones, Horses Frightened by Lightning (adapted from the art by equine painter Alfred de Dreaux). Black and white horses, startled by a visible bolt, run away from the stream as cows stand placidly by in the water. At the lower left is a young girl wearing a necklace; the other three corners show intricate "2" dies. The red protector at bottom center outlines a white TWO. Noted as "Stained; Minor Edge Damage." A rare issued type; most of these notes were redeemed by the bank. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society, Heritage Auctions Internet Sale (5/2016). (Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions, ha.com.) Realized $1116.25

- St. Louis, MO - Bank of St. Louis (2nd), Branch Payable at (St. Louis?) $1 18?? MO-50 G20a. PCGS Very Good 8 Apparent. This unregistered Civil War series (it did not have a countersignature on the face when emitted) combines a tremendous layout with inspired vignettes by the American Bank Note Co., Philadelphia imprint. This was also a Branch Payable type with an engraved line inserted in the obligation for the issued notes to be given a location for redemption, which in this case is indistinct. At the top center, the wide, evocative Indian buffalo-hunting scene, originally engraved by Toppan, Carpenter & Co., is positioned above the red protector lathe work outlining ONE in white. At the lower left is a young woman's portrait, and at the lower right is a dog and safe motif. Though low grade, this is a rare issued note with clear signatures. Noted along with its Apparent designation are "Edge and Internal Splits, Tears and Damage; Tape on Back." The branch color proof of this style realized $5,170 in the Newman Part VI sale in April 2015. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society, Heritage Auctions Internet Sale (5/2016). (Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions, ha.com.) Realized $217.38

- St. Louis, Missouri Territory - Bank of St. Louis (1st) $1 July, 1817 MO-45 G14. PCGS Fine 15 Apparent. This is a second series Bank of St. Louis rarity and uses both the city name and "Missouri Territory" designations on the plate. A uniquely styled vignette by Leney & Rollinson reflects American military success during the recently concluded War of 1812. At top center, an eagle without an olive branch takes a wide stance on the barrel of a cannon. Oddly, its wings are both pointing to the right, but the feather details are exemplary. Extremely intricate lathe work panels are at each end. Perpendicular ONE denominations are at the ends: in a rectangle at left and an oval at right. Noted with a "Missing UR Corner; Repaired Edge Tears." Though there is piece absent from the upper right, the vignetted portion is well detailed and the note rare. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society, Heritage Auctions Internet Sale (5/2016). (Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions, ha.com.) Realized $329.00
