- Madison, WI - Merchants Bank $1 18__ WI-380 G2. Proof. PCGS Superb Gem New 67PPQ. Another rare Madison bank with mostly proof notes known. This India paper proof was engraved and printed by Danforth, Wright & Co. with a tremendously attractive layout. Most of a partly concealed, sculptural "Lazy 1" in lathe work runs across the bottom center and extends into the seal to complete the feature. At top center, a milkmaid is seated on a log beside a large shield. It shows the sun rising over the mountains and a sailing ship and passing train in the foreground. Mercury is in a circular frame at lower right. Noted as "Hole Punch Cancelled" as made. The proofs without tint were not in the Krause collection sales. We believe the two Newman Collection $1 proofs without protector are the only examples in private hands. This is the finest of two, and the last available. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society, Heritage Auctions Internet Sale (5/2016). (Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions, ha.com.) Realized $940.00

- Madison, WI - Dane County Bank $20 January 1, 1855 WI-365 G12. Proof. PCGS Gem New 66PPQ. As the state capitol, Madison was the location of several banks. This is a rare bank and a beautifully vignetted proof engraved and printed by Danforth, Wright & Co., New York & Philadelphia on India paper only. This proof was printed on the two-subject $10-$20 plate, and an example of that sheet on cardstock appeared in the 1990 American Banknote Company Archive sale, and later, Chet Krause's auctions. In the center is a facing girl's portrait seen on this series only, with shaded "2" and "0" flanking. The title is at the top. At the far left is standing female America. Hole Punch Cancelled as prepared by the engravers. A gorgeous example with distinctive styling. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society, Heritage Auctions Internet Sale (5/2016). (Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions, ha.com.) Realized $763.75

- Kanosha [Kenosha], WI - City Bank of Kanosha $1 18__ WI-310 G2. Proof. PCGS Very Choice New 64PPQ. This is an unusual proof series with Kenosha misspelled as "Kanosha" on the engraved plate printed by Danforth, Bald & Co. An India paper proof mounted on original card. These proofs could be classified as essays or errors, depending on your point of view. Known only as proofs, of course; the engravers fixed the plate for the issued notes and their complementary proofs. A Native American hunter stands regally by his white horse and contemplates a long train heading westward in the foreground of a mountain vista. At the lower right is the vignette of a Native American mother and her child. Intricate Durand patent dies are in the upper corners. Noted as "Hole Punch Cancelled" and "Mounted on Cardstock" as made. There are a few known as some of the proofs surfaced in the 1990 American Banknote Company sale. A great major vignette type and nearly a Gem example. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society, Heritage Auctions Internet Sale (5/2016). (Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions, ha.com.)
