- Columbus, WI - Bank of Columbus $2 18__ WI-95 G4. Proof. PCGS Superb Gem New 67PPQ. A very scarce bank from Wisconsin with proofs and some issued notes known. The bank also officially passed half notes, acting as 50 cents, to make change. This boldly printed India paper proof mounted on cardstock was engraved by Toppan, Carpenter & Co, New York & Philadelphia (the sheet used an unusual $1-$2-$2-$5 configuration). Beneath the arced title, a team of surveyors is at work on recently cleared land. An oval portrait of Columbus is at the lower left. At the lower right, Capital $50,000 is under the seal. This "A" position proof is from the early capitalization of the bank. The $1 proof in the Newman Part VI sale, graded PCGS Gem New 66PPQ, realized $3,995. The other $2 proof from the Newman Collection sheet realized $1,116.25 in October 2015. Noted as "Hole Punch Cancelled" and "Mounted on Cardstock" as made. This is nearly perfect. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society, Heritage Auctions Internet Sale (5/2016). (Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions, ha.com.) Realized $1645.00

- Beaver Dam, WI - Mercantile Bank $1 18__ WI-45 G2. Proof. PCGS Superb Gem New 68PPQ. This Beaver Dam proof series is the rarest by far from this town and was not present in the Krause Collection in either proof or issued format. We believe there are no issued notes from this bank that would have used red protectors. The illustrated $1 proof in both references, Haxby and Krause, is from the Wisconsin Historical Society's sheet ($1-$1-$3-$5). This masterfully styled India paper proof on cardstock, in nearly perfect condition, was engraved and printed by Toppan, Carpenter, Casilear & Co. It is an "A" position note and has a vignette of a Native American man on a hill overlooking a scenic river view. Interestingly, the vignette was also used for the What Cheer Bank of Rhode Island. Intricate counters are in all corners. Noted as "Hole Punch Cancelled" and "Mounted on Cardstock" as made. The other, PCGS Superb Gem New $1 proof from this series was sold in Newman Part VII for $1,527.50. A second and final opportunity to obtain this type in Superb Gem proof. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society, Heritage Auctions Internet Sale (5/2016). (Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions, ha.com.) Realized $1086.88

- York Town, VA - Peninsula Bank, payable at Banking House of H. T. Pairo, Richmond 50 Cents September 18, 1861 Jones & Littlefield PY30-28. PCGS Fine 15 Apparent. A very rare issuer, rated Rarity-7G, and a choice example. This is a tie note with Richmond and was payable at the Pairo office. The bold title PENINSULA BANK is across, and a small profile of a dog's head is at top center. The obligation is across the bottom center. At lower left are three opened oysters. The very bold signature of Chas. H. Wynne is at the lower right. Noted as "Backed," but very bright from the face. This note is much superior to the only example we have cataloged from the series, also a 50 cents, which realized $763.75. This lovely note is a fitting finale to the many fascinating Virginia rarities unveiled from the Newman Collection albums. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society, Heritage Auctions Internet Sale (5/2016). (Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions, ha.com.) Realized $646.25

- Richmond, VA - War Bank 50 Cents July 15, 1861 Jones & Littlefield PR60-891. Remainder. PCGS Choice About New 58PPQ. A high-grade remainder note from this great title. Printed on blue paper. This note shares the common style used on the series: the title WAR BANK is prominent across; "50 CTS." in a wreath is at top center; the perpendicular textual denomination is in the left end panel; and the Virginia seal is at bottom right. This bold remainder shows only faint handling. Ideal for a Civil War scrip note collection featuring unusual titles and rarities. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society, Heritage Auctions Internet Sale (5/2016). (Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions, ha.com.) Realized $305.50

- Richmond, VA - War Bank 25 Cents July 15, 1861 Jones & Littlefield PR60-890. PCGS Fine 12 Apparent. This is a great title and appears to be officially issued. Printed on white paper. The series' notes share a common style: the title WAR BANK is prominent across; "25 CTS." in a wreath is at top center; the perpendicular textual denomination is in the left end panel; and the Virginia seal is at bottom right. Both signatures appear proper, and the wear is normal for a note from this period and location. Noted with "Hinge Repaired Edge Tear at UL; Stained." Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society, Heritage Auctions Internet Sale (5/2016). (Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions, ha.com.) Realized $881.25
