- Richmond, VA - R. T. Sale, Family Groceries, Bread, Pies, Cakes & C. 5 Cents January 30, 1862 Jones & Littlefield PR60-735. PCGS About Good 3. This is a great rarity. The worn condition is academic, and it certainly this falls into the old-timer "rag picker" genre: notes that the traditional Virginia collectors used to discuss at the Virginia Numismatic Association (VNA) shows decades ago. The note shares a style with Richmond's McKeever "Havana Cigar" notes. Printed on white paper without imprint. A small eagle vignette is at top center with "5 Cts." on each side. The obligation is across with FIVE CENTS below. The left end shows a standing statue representing Agriculture. The right end has an oblong cartouche with perpendicular text: GOOD FOR/5 CENTS. The signature at the lower right is still a bold red despite the wear. This is a Rarity-7 listed note (2-4 known) and the issuer has charm and a great title. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society, Heritage Auctions Internet Sale (5/2016). (Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions, ha.com.) Realized $998.75

- Richmond, VA - Richmond Exchange Office, 41 Main St. - Jacob Ezekiel 5 Cents April 10, 1862 Jones & Littlefield PR60-700. PCGS Choice About New 58. A stylish and high-grade scrip note printed on blue paper. The notes from the series share a common style: the central vignette of seated Agriculture with plow bisects the title, the bolded denomination is underneath, and the ends have a fine lathe pattern. The rarity rating in the old Affleck reference and the Jones & Littlefield expansion seems to be liberal in our view. We have not cataloged this series. The only note from the issuer in the Affleck Collection sold in 1983 by NASCA was the 25 cents note plated in the original Affleck scrip note volume. We believe this a sleeper type, and the condition is superb. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society, Heritage Auctions Internet Sale (5/2016). (Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions, ha.com.) Realized $1527.50
