- Richmond, VA - Phoenix Bank $5 January 2, 1859 VA-185 G2a, Jones & Littlefield BR80-06. PCGS Fine 12 Apparent. A rare bank and note engraved by Draper, Welsh & Co. At top center, the Phoenix rises from the flames in an ornate urn flanked by hexagonal "5" dies. At far left end is the rare vignette of the Washington Equestrian Monument in Richmond with visitors strolling about the grounds. An oval John Marshall portrait is at the upper right. A red protector FIVE is at the bottom. Noted with "Rust Stains and Damage; Tape Repairs on Back." A fairly solid note overall. Ex: Eric P. - Richmond, VA - Peoples Savings Bank $1 September 3, 1861 Jones & Littlefield BR75-20. PCGS Fine 12 Apparent. The highest and only dollar-denominated note in the series. Printed on thin blue-gray paper. This has the common design used on other denominations. At the left end is standing Agriculture. The title is left of center, over the obligation. At the upper right is the "Female Riding Deer" vignette seen on bogus Confederate notes. Noted with "Edge Damage and Tape Repair at Right; Minor Stains." This is a solid note overall, and it has excellent vignette clarity. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society, Heritage Auctions Internet Sale (5/2016). (Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions, ha.com.) Realized $998.75

- Richmond, VA - Peoples Savings Bank 25 Cents September 3, 1861 Jonse & Littlefield BR75-05. PCGS Fine 12 Apparent. The bank was authorized by the General Assembly of Virginia and is listed in the banks section of Jones & Littlefield, but not in Haxby. Printed on thin blue-gray paper. Each denomination shares a common design. At the left end is standing Agriculture. The title is left of center, over the obligation. At the upper right is the "Female Riding Deer" vignette seen on bogus Confederate notes. This is another underrated series, and the few notes we have encountered are worn. Noted with "Edge Tears; Minor Stains," but this is in well above average condition and has broad margins on three sides. We have not cataloged this title. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society, Heritage Auctions Internet Sale (5/2016). (Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions, ha.com.) Realized $1410.00
