- Montgomery, VA - Confederate Savings Bank 50 Cents April 1, 1862 Jones & Littlefield PM75-05. PCGS Fine 15 Apparent. We have never cataloged a note from this title, and it was not represented in the NASCA 1983 Affleck Collection sale. It is not categorized in Jones & Littlefield as a "Savings Bank," despite the signature style, but it is listed with the scrip note issuers. Locally printed by Johnson Pr., Lynchburg on brown paper. At top center is the New York State coat of arms, with the motto EXCELSIOR on the banner. The left end shows a Native American huntress. The title in Gothic is across, bisected by the central vignette, and the obligation is underneath. Noted with "Small Rust Stains at Top Center; Minor Mounting Remnants on Back." Broadly margined and vibrant. A great title and rarity. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society, Heritage Auctions Internet Sale (5/2016). (Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions, ha.com.) Realized $1410.00

- Martinsburg, VA - Bank of Berkeley in Virginia $10 November 15, 1853 VA-135 G4, Jones & Littlefield BM15-10. PCGS Fine 12 Apparent. This is a rare bank. Martinsburg is located in present-day West Virginia. The layout by Draper, Welsh & Co. is very distinctive. At the top, a locomotive and the first four cars are visible as a long train rounds a curve. At the left end, a more tranquil vignette shows oxen pulling a hay wagon through a leafy landscape; a man and his bay horse are leading. The plain back has a Pennsylvania merchant's stamping. Perhaps less than ten issued notes from the entire bank are extant, based on our observations across three decades. The bank was not in the NASCA 1983 Charles Affleck Collection sale. Noted with "Small Edge Tears; Minor Stains," but a significant bank rarity. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society, Heritage Auctions Internet Sale (5/2016). (Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions, ha.com.) Realized $881.25

- Lynchburg, VA - Planters Savings Bank 15 Cents March 12, 1862 Jones & Littlefield BL45-10. PCGS Very Fine 25 Apparent. An underrated note in this condition, and a bright example by Virginian Print, Lynchburg. Colorful red tinting is across the note, deeper at the ends. Titles and obligations are across the center. The left end panel has three circular vignettes and a discrete perpendicular "15." Noted only with an "Edge Tear at Left," but perhaps two grades higher than the few we have seen. An excellent opportunity for the informed specialist. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society, Heritage Auctions Internet Sale (5/2016). (Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions, ha.com.) Realized $211.50

- Lynchburg, VA - Merchants Bank of Virginia $10 March 1, 1853 VA-125 G12, Jones & Littlefield BL40-45. PCGS Fine 15 Apparent. Issued notes from this Danforth, Bald & Co. engraved series are also infrequently encountered. In classic style, this 1850s imprint features three allegorical females at upper left: Agriculture, Liberty, and Navigation (sometimes called Science). To the right is the Virginia treasurer's seal. Seated Athena is at far right. A bold note from the face with only a "Repaired Edge Split at Right" noted, and that is barely noticeable. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society, Heritage Auctions Internet Sale (5/2016). (Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions, ha.com.) Realized $352.50

- Fredericksburg, VA - Bank of Commerce $5 January 1, 1856 VA-80 G2, Jones & Littlefield BF30-06. PCGS Very Good 10 Apparent. Genuine notes from the bank are seldom offered for sale. This fully issued note shows distinctive engraving by Baldwin, Adams & Co. Slightly right of top center is a clipper ship. At the far left are a standing sailor and seated mechanic. This note is registered with the state, as shown by the signature perpendicular at the right near the lower right official seal. This faces up nicely, with some normal soiling seen. Grading has noted "Hole Punch Cancelled," which consists of two small cancellations, and trivial "Mounting Remnants on Back." Infrequently encountered and underrated. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society, Heritage Auctions Internet Sale (5/2016). (Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions, ha.com.) Realized $305.50

- Fincastle, VA - Farmers Bank of Fincastle $100 18__ VA-75 G10, Jones & Littlefield BF25-50. Remainder. PCGS Choice About New 55. A scarce and attractive type. Printed as a single-note sheet by the American Bank Note Company. At top center is the dramatic, classic engraving by Alfred Jones, Horses Frightened by Lightning (adapted from the art by equine painter Alfred de Dreaux). Black and white horses, startled by a visible bolt, run away from the stream as cows stand placidly by in the water. Oval "100" dies are in the upper corners and a "C" die is at the lower left. The Virginia registered seal is at the lower right. The type is only found unissued; no signed notes have been observed. We sold a slightly finer example at the 2015 Long Beach auction for $705. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society, Heritage Auctions Internet Sale (5/2016). (Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions, ha.com.) Realized $587.50
