- Danville, VA - Danville Bank $20 August 21, 1858 VA-65 G6a, Jones & Littlefield BD05-20. PCGS Fine 12. A scarce denomination from this series of 1850s notes. An American Bank Note Company with earlier imprint of Danforth, Perkins & Co. printing with full red tint outlining a curving TWENTY protector. A seated tobacco merchant, next to a named barrel, with harvesting behind is at the top center. At upper left is the Union vignette showing a standing woman next to column. - Clarksburg, VA - Virginia Saline Bank $1 March 2, 1815 VA-60 G2, Jones & Littlefield BC40-05. PCGS Very Fine 30 Apparent. A very crisp and bright example of this very scarce note. Distinctively engraved by Murray, Draper, Fairman & Co. The top center shows a several buildings on the banks of a river spanned by a stone bridge. Ornate panels used by the engraver have a perpendicular VIRGINIA at the left end and ONE DOLLAR at the right. Noted with "Small Edge Splits; Minor Mounting Remnants on Back." Most notes observed from the bank are worn and limp, but this has crisp paper body and vibrancy. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society, Heritage Auctions Internet Sale (5/2016). - Charlottesville, VA - Monticello Bank $50 June 19, 1860 VA-45 G28a, Jones & Littlefield BC25-35. PCGS Fine 15. The $50 note from this American Bank Note Company series is much rarer than the $20 or lesser denominations from the bank. The color and layout are striking. Monticello as engraved for the series is at the right. The arced title is at top center with a vermillion FIFTY DOLLARS arced directly underneath. The left end shows standing America engraved by Alfred Jones, a vignette also used on the $20 demand notes. Other color details include a large protector "L," upper counter surrounds and a left end outlined perpendicular die. We have auctioned two others that easily realized over $1,000. Allegorical cherubs are at top center with a stone "9" counter tablet. The lower left has two cherubs in an oval vying for control of the flag. At the lower right is a standing allegorical female in an oval. Noted with some "Minor Rust Stains" scattered across the face. The blank back has a lengthy, perpendicular period annotation. The highest denomination Rawdon, Wright & Hatch, New-York/Rawdon, Wright, Hatch & Edson, New-Orleans engraved note from this series. At the top center is a group of livestock between "5" dies. At far left is a tall Native American huntress, a sea nymph is in the water at lower right and a plowing scene is at bottom center.
