- Austin, TX - Republic of Texas $50 August 20, 1839 Cr. A7, Olson 766, Medlar 27. PCGS Very Fine 35 Apparent. The higher denomination in the fifth Republic series, issued from Austin, engraved and printed by Rawdon, Wright Hatch & Edson, New Orleans with the added imprint of Rawdon, Wright & Hatch, New York. These are the Orange Star back notes, and they are especially attractive. The introduction of the intaglio color backs on this series is one of the earlier uses of color backs in American security printing history and practice. This is an is especially ornate note. A paddlewheel steamer is at the top right center. At the upper left is Venus Rising from the Sea, adapted from the art of John Barry (1772). A male portrait is at the far right between "50" dies. Like the other denominations on the orange back series, it has the large five-pointed Texas Star with each letter of T E X A S in between a star point respectively. Noted as "Cross-Cut Cancelled" from the period and with "Tape Repaired Cancellations." These notes are justifiably very popular and this is a handsome type. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society, Heritage Auctions Internet Sale (5/2016). (Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions, ha.com.) Realized $376.00

- Tazewell, TN - Bank of Tazewell $50 May 1, 1854 TN-230 G14a, Garland 1224. PCGS Very Fine 20 Apparent. This is one of the rarest banks from the state and the highest denomination in the series. Engraved and printed by Danforth, Wright & Co. At the right end is large vignette of the State House. The far left end panel is composed of three dies, with a "50" between "L" above and below. The signature of the comptroller is perpendicular at the upper left. The red security back is the same as used on the Bank of Claiborne, with a large oval die in the center flanked by smaller round dies. We have handled only one note from the bank, also a $50, and it saw spirited competition in April 2008. That example was sold "raw" and graded "Very Good to Fine," realizing $4,312.50. This note has a much sharper face, but grading notes "Mounting Remnants on Back." A key note and perhaps the finest issued note of its type. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society, Heritage Auctions Internet Sale (5/2016). (Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions, ha.com.) Realized $2820.00
