- Nashville, TN - Otis Anolo & Co. Payable at Planters Bank of Tennessee $1 December 1, 1837 Garland 977. PCGS Very Fine 20 Apparent. A banknote-style scrip note, printed without an imprint, and deceptively titled to convince the public it was a bank. At top center, Commerce is seated at the shore above AUTHORIZED BY THE STATE. This is a total fraud. The bank title across is also meant to make the note more acceptable. At lower left is an oval vignette of a cattle drive. At lower right is a Native American hunter. The note was endorsed across the back. Noted with some "Minor Rust Stains," but a bright example. With unusual payable information and very scarce. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society, Heritage Auctions Internet Sale (5/2016). (Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions, ha.com.) Realized $152.75

- Nashville, TN - Planters Bank of Tennessee $3 December 1, 1860 TN-185 G10a, Garland 987. PCGS Fine 12. This is a rare Rawdon, Wright, Hatch & Edson, New Orleans engraved type with an 1840s style face and later period red security back. A farmer and hunter support a shield at top right center; an intricate "3" die is to the left. The far left panel has a cameo profile at the center, sculptural detailing and counters in corners. The right end has a tall, elaborate "3" enclosing a standing allegorical female. The date is engraved. The back shows a horizontal diamond shape with a lathe strip across the center. This is another underrated note and a problem-free example. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society, Heritage Auctions Internet Sale (5/2016). (Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions, ha.com.) Realized $293.75

- Nashville, TN - G. Spencer - Capitol Restaurant, Family Bakery and Ice Cream Saloon, 18 Cedar Street 5 Cents April 18, 1862 Garland UNL. PCGS Very Fine 25 Apparent. This is an impressively designed and printed private scrip note with a distinctive character. Printed on white paper in all blue. The top center vignette is curious for the title, various fowl and game hanging (no ice cream in sight?) It is enclosed within the curved portions of the title. A diminutive duck at upper left and turkey upper right are over the title. ICE CREAM SALOON is straight across with FIVE CENTS at the bottom. Standing at left end is a milkmaid, and at right, a farmer. Noted only with some "Small Repairs." The first example we have seen of this visually exciting note. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society, Heritage Auctions Internet Sale (5/2016). (Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions, ha.com.) Realized $2350.00
