- Hamburg, SC - Bank of Hamburg (2nd) $50 October 9, 1847 SC-86 G14a, Sheheen 245. PCGS Very Fine 30 Apparent. A very rare and unusual note with the Toppan, Carpenter & Co. imprint, but using the plate originally engraved by Draper, Toppan, Longacre & Co. This has a Rarity-7 (2-4 known) rating in Sheheen, and is a type we have never cataloged. At top center is an early train vignette, flanked by "50" dies, that bisects the curving title across. Statues at the end feature Ceres at the left and Navigation at the right. Both stand upon a "50" die. The "Minor Stains" noted by grading consist of some fold foxing. A key note for the specialist. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society, Heritage Auctions Internet Sale (5/2016). (Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions, ha.com.) Realized $705.00

- Greenville, SC - Hightower & Fuller 5 Cents September 20, 1865 Sheheen UNL. PCGS Very Good 10. This is a great discovery in the Newman Collection South Carolina albums: a scrip note that is unlisted in the Austin Sheheen reference, but is similar to Sheheen 1004, McBee's Mills 5 cents, that is plated from a photocopy. Printed on white paper in blue by G.E. Elford's Press, Greenville, S.C. The title is at the top with the partners' names directly underneath. The obligation and denomination FIVE CENTS are across. The note is post-war and is payable in "U.S. Treasury Notes." Simple bordering is around the perimeter, and the perpendicular denominations are in the ends. A red "5" protector is in the center. A remarkable note for the specialist. There are relatively few South Carolina scrip note issuers, and a new find is always met with great interest. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society, Heritage Auctions Internet Sale (5/2016). (Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions, ha.com.) Realized $2232.50

- Estherville, SC - Estherville Plantation 10 Cents March 1, 1876 (over January 1, 1869) Sheheen 979. PCGS Fine 12. This is a change note denomination from an unusual scrip series printed on white paper in all blue, without imprint (likely Walker Agt. Print, Charleston, that printed the larger dollar denominations). The final date is overwritten on the engraved Jan. 1, 1869. Four textual lines are across with a large TEN CENTS; the note is enlivened by a pattern border all around. A small, charming vignette showing a large house with an evergreen tree and the outlines of clouds is at the lower left. The back has a small "10" die that mimics the style of First Issued United States Fractional Currency. Choice, not soiled heavily, and well above average for this very scarce note. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society, Heritage Auctions Internet Sale (5/2016). (Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions, ha.com.) Realized $105.75
