- Charleston, SC - Bank of Charleston $5 18__ SC-10 G2, Sheheen 50. Proof. PCGS About New 50. A very bold India paper proof impression of this iconic Draper, Toppan, Longacre & Co. plate design. The vignette at the right side became the "Indian Princess," adapted for the Confederate States of America $5 Type 35 note. The original bank retained their $5-$5-$5-$5 plate for the series, and later it was sent it to Hoyer & Ludwig in Richmond to produce that iconic and rare Confederate type. The seated female at the top center wearing period dress represents Plenty, Commerce, Navigation, and Hope. A thriving harbor is seen in the background. The ends are stylishly complementary. At the left, the prince rests at the riverbank with his elbow on one knee, appearing to wait for his princess, who is pictured at the right end across the river. The vignette pairing does appear on a Confederate States bond, but only the princess appears on a Confederate currency note. This plate position A proof is designated as "Hole Punch Cancelled" as made. A similar example realized $1,880 in the Newman Part VII sale in October 2015. This is a superb impression. It is key to understanding the evolution of the notes, and is an essential historic type for Confederate currency collectors. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society, Heritage Auctions Internet Sale (5/2016). (Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions, ha.com.) Realized $940.00

- Woonsocket, RI - Producers Bank $500 July 3, 1861 Contemporary Counterfeit RI-585 C27, Durand 2648. PCGS Very Fine 30. A well made and scarce counterfeit with the Danforth, Bald & Co. imprint. Elaborate counters are in the upper corners. A Washington portrait is top left. At top right, Justice and Industry, constrained by a cartouche, lean toward one another and rest their elbows on a beehive. Classically garbed George Washington is seated at lower left. Martha Washington is at the lower right. A red "500" protector is at the bottom. The counterfeiting of this type is unusual since a high-denomination note would be heavily scrutinized. A very sharp example, bright and vibrant. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society, Heritage Auctions Internet Sale (5/2016). (Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions, ha.com.) Realized $540.50
