- Madisonville, MS - Madisonville & Pearl River Turnpike Co. $10 March 1, 1839 MS-140 G16, Kraus 29857, Leggett 16. PCGS Very Fine 25 Apparent. The $10 denomination from this Draper, Toppan, Longacre & Co. has exquisite vignettes. At top center, slaves, including a child, harvest cotton from a large plant and place the bolls in sacks. Numeric counters are flanking. A portrait of a woman is at the left end, and a deer is at the right. The lower corners have "X" blocks. Columbus. Fully issued and with a written notation "Judgment 18 May 1838" near the top center. An eagle vignette is flanked by counters surrounded by a variety of border cuts. End panels show circular and oval elements. Small print at the top edge pledges real estate. Noted with a "Small Edge Tear at Bottom Right." This is a rare type and the first we have cataloged. - Jackson, MS - State of Mississippi $1 September 1, 1870 Cr. 53, Kraus 56825. PCGS Very Fine 30 Apparent. This $1 note from this Continental Bank Note Co. engraved color series does not have the large hole-cancel usually seen, and is rarer thus. This well-balanced note shows farmers with plow horses at bottom center between two green "1" protectors. In the bottom corners, a Governor Alcorn portrait is at left, and a train traveling forward at right. The arced title is at top center between ONE/1 dies, black at left and green at right. A green frame is all around. The green printed back shows a central oval with text around and state house in the center. Circular vignettes show a ship at left and worker loading a bale at right. At the four intersecting areas are "1" counters. Noted with "Edge Splits; Stains," that are heavier on the back. Ex: Eric P. Right of center, crouching Agriculture leans her arm on seated Commerce's knee as they discuss the ships at sail in the distance. A large green "50" is between them and the Native American male with bow and arrow at the far left. A green protector with multiples of "50" and STATE OF MISSISSIPPI covers most of the bottom half. At the far right are numerical and textual counters. The orange printed back has two farmers at the center, imprint underneath, between the bisected title above and below and the "50" dies on either side. - Jackson, MS - State of Mississippi $20 186_ Cr. 48, Kraus 49614B. Remainder. PCGS Very Fine 35. A distinctive, late type lithographed by Paterson & Co., Augusta, Ga. These only come unissued. The arced title is at top center above the denomination over a red "20" protector. A large eagle clutching a shield is to the left at the bottom over FAITH OF THE STATE PLEDGED. The seated Native American woman at bottom right is not holding a child this time, as she is in a number of other vignettes. The rest of the corners show elaborate denomination counters. The green printed back shows a large "XX" at center with STATE OF above, MISSISSIPPI below and elaborate dies at the sides. The handling is moderate and this well margined note looks higher grade.
