- Jackson, MS - State of Mississippi $20 186_ Cr. 48, Kraus 49614B. Remainder. PCGS Very Fine 35. A distinctive, late type lithographed by Paterson & Co., Augusta, Ga. These only come unissued. The arced title is at top center above the denomination over a red "20" protector. A large eagle clutching a shield is to the left at the bottom over FAITH OF THE STATE PLEDGED. The seated Native American woman at bottom right is not holding a child this time, as she is in a number of other vignettes. The rest of the corners show elaborate denomination counters. The green printed back shows a large "XX" at center with STATE OF above, MISSISSIPPI below and elaborate dies at the sides. The handling is moderate and this well margined note looks higher grade. - Jackson, MS - State of Mississippi $20 January 19, 1863 Pay in 1864 Cr. 7b, Kraus 49451Cd. PCGS About New 50. The Civil War State of Mississippi notes varied in style and complexity as the war progressed. The initial series notes, printed on red fiber bond paper from plates engraved by the American Bank Note Co. N.Y. & N.O., are beautifully crafted, state-of-the-art types. The Criswell listings (now Shull-Criswell listings published by Whitman) separate combinations of issue dates and the dates payable in the future. This striking note $20 note shows a bright vermillion guilloche at the bottom. A wide vignette of horses pulling a wagon with a heavy load as slaves harvest cotton plants is at top center. Bold "20" dies are in the upper corners. Oval portraits are in the lower corners: a young woman in fancy dress holding a dove at left, and Governor Pettus at the right. Slightly close here and there, but generally well framed with sharp color. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society, Heritage Auctions Internet Sale (5/2016). - Jackson, MS - Green's Exchange and Banking Office, pay at Pearl River Mills 50 Cents July 1, 1862, Kraus 53751, Leggett UNL. PCGS Good 4 Apparent. A very rare note and more than enough of it is present to make it very collectible. This Type I note from the series was printed on thin paper without an imprint and shows a partially written date. The title is at the top, "50 Cents." is in a cartouche at left and FIFTY CENTS is perpendicular at the right end. A flourish can be seen to the left of the word "Jackson" in script. The signature of Green is still very sharp. We have handled two other notes from the issuer from different series. A $3 note graded Fine 15 Apparent sold for $1,410 at the 2015 FUN auction. The other example was a 50 cents in a different style graded Fine 12 Apparent; it sold for $2,530 at the September 2013 Long Beach auction. The "Good 4" is accurate and it is noted as "Backed," which was done in the period to extend its circulation. This might be a discovery example and is the first we have seen. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society, Heritage Auctions Internet Sale (5/2016). (Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions, ha.com.) Realized $517.00
