- New Ulm, MN - Central Bank $2 18?? MN-90 G4a, Hewitt B380-D2b. PCGS Good 6 Apparent. The bank is very rare, and less than ten issued notes of all denominations are on the census. The opportunity to obtain an issued $2 may never return. The only four proofs from New Ulm sold for impressive prices in the April 2015 Newman Part VI sale. The layout and vignette details are quintessential Wellstood imprint styles. At the center, a steamboat heads down river with dark smoke coming from the stacks. In the bottom corners are an interesting paired set of seated female vignettes facing across the note. At the left is a Native American huntress and across, facing, an allegorical representation of History. The upper corners have matching "2" dies and ornate filigree. At bottom center is a red protector TWO. This is one of five issued notes of the type on the census. We sold a better, but not by that much, issued example last year for $1,057.50. Grading notes that this $2 is "Backed; Tape Repaired," but it is very collectible, despite a faded date and the listed faults. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society, Heritage Auctions Internet Sale (5/2016). (Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions, ha.com.) Realized $235.00

- Minneapolis, MN - Office of R. J. Mendenhall 5 Cents January 1, 1862 Hewitt A210-F5-1. Remainder. PCGS Very Fine 35 Apparent. This extremely rare scrip note is the Hewitt plate note. He reports only two examples on his census. A dazzling note, lithographed by Corlies & Macy, with the green "5" starburst in the center amplified by the green lace tint radiating outward. The text and obligations are contained within a modified football-shaped border. Hunting vignettes are outside, with the main events in the corners. Clockwise from upper left are: a stalking dog, an alert buck, a standing hunter, and a hunter taking a shot as his dog stands by. The "Mounting Remnants on Back" do not affect the charm and desirability of this Hewitt plate note. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society, Heritage Auctions Internet Sale (5/2016). (Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions, ha.com.) Realized $540.50

- Hokah, MN - La Crosse and La Crescent Bank $2 January 1, 1859 MN-50 G4a, Hewitt B200-D2-2b. PCGS Very Good 10 Apparent. The bank is rare, and this is an exceedingly rare variant. It is the only one listed on the Hewitt census, offered at auction for the first time from the Newman Collection. The title of this American Bank Note Company $2 is on three lines, arced downward at the top and upward at the bottom, with the middle line curving. Surrounding flourishes provide a dramatic effect. Union, in her elaborate gown, is to the right of center. An agricultural scene is at the lower left, and a young girl at the lower right. Differently styled "2" dies are in the upper corners. Noted are "Tape Repairs on Back; Minor Rust Stains." This condition is quite acceptable due to the note's great rarity and specialist appeal. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society, Heritage Auctions Internet Sale (5/2016). (Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions, ha.com.) Realized $493.50

- Glencoe, MN - Exchange Bank $2 October 5, 1858 MN-35 G4a, Hewitt B140-D2b. PCGS Very Fine 20 Apparent. A very scarce issued note from a finely engraved American Bank Note Company series. There are less than ten issued notes enumerated on the Shawn Hewitt census. A Native American hunting vignette is at top center under the arced Gothic title. A wide-eyed girl with a hairband and fur collar is at the lower left. Fallen elk and a dog are at the lower right. Grading notes "Rust Stains; Small Internal Slit at Right," but the imagery is dynamic nonetheless. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society, Heritage Auctions Internet Sale (5/2016). (Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions, ha.com.) Realized $940.00
