- Toledo, OH - Erie and Kalamazoo Rail Road Bank $1.25 January 16, 1841 Wolka 2556-02, Lee-ADR-4-66. PCGS Very Fine 25. An interesting odd denomination from the firm founded in Adrian, Michigan and moved to Toledo. Beautifully engraved by Stiles. The vignettes are the same as on the $1: Under the arced title at the top, a seated allegorical female holds a rudder with a caduceus top; symbols of agriculture and commerce are near her. Counters show the denomination in fractions. Oval dies flank the vignettes, and identical denomination blocks are in the corners. Well margined with moderate circulation. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society, Heritage Auctions Internet Sale (5/2016). (Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions, ha.com.) Realized $56.00

- Toledo, OH - Erie and Kalamazoo Rail Road Bank $1 January 18, 1841 Wolka 2556-01, Lee-ADR-4-65. PCGS Extremely Fine 40PPQ. The issuer was founded in Adrian, Michigan and later moved to Toledo, making this a tie note with Wolka and Lee reference listings. The titles on this series are complicated, but it looks like a banknote with its fine engraving by S. Stiles, New York. Haxby classified these as "Checks" and chose not to list them. Under the arced title at the top, a seated allegorical female holds a rudder with a caduceus top; symbols of agriculture and commerce are near her. The corners hold ONE counters, different on the top and bottom. At center in the left end is an oval portrait of recently elected William Henry Harrison. A train in an oval is at the right. A very sharp example. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society, Heritage Auctions Internet Sale (5/2016). (Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions, ha.com.) Realized $79.00

- Pontiac, MI - Comstock & Stout, Bankers 10 Cents September 1, 1862 Lee-PON-2-UNL. PCGS Very Good 10 Apparent. An exceedingly rare and unlisted denomination from this series. The style is simple, but this might be a unique note. Printed on brown rag paper without imprint. This note shows the bank's title reiterated in the left end panel with a pattern border. At the upper left is BANK OF EXCHANGE. A rudimentary "10" counter is at upper right. Signatures are nicely penned. Noted with "Edge Splits and Tears; Small Hole at Right." - Plymouth, MI - Wayne County Bank at Plymouth $10 December 13, 1837 MI-320 G10, Lee-PLY-1-7. PCGS Very Fine 25. This is a much scarcer Michigan bank, and is rarely encountered in the choice condition of this example. The $10 notes from the series boast some strong auction records that coincide with Wallace Lee's high catalog value of $600. A framed image of the head of a boar (an emblem used on Continental currency) is at top center flanked by "X" dies. Both ends show elaborate engraved details at top and bottom. A large "10" die is at the center at the left end. The right end shows a circular vignette with the seated Native American adapted from Chapman's The Ruins of Jamestown. He is on one side of a shield, an eagle is on top, and a well-dressed man holding a sextant is on the other side. This is a bold note and appears superior to the raw $10 remainder we sold in the 2004 FUN auction for $690. A dozen years is a long time, but a realization in that vicinity seems appropriate for this issued note with the exceptional Newman Collection pedigree. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society, Heritage Auctions Internet Sale (5/2016). (Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions, ha.com.) Realized $587.50
