- Plymouth, MI - Wayne County Bank at Plymouth $10 December 13, 1837 MI-320 G10, Lee-PLY-1-7. PCGS Very Fine 25. This is a much scarcer Michigan bank, and is rarely encountered in the choice condition of this example. The $10 notes from the series boast some strong auction records that coincide with Wallace Lee's high catalog value of $600. A framed image of the head of a boar (an emblem used on Continental currency) is at top center flanked by "X" dies. Both ends show elaborate engraved details at top and bottom. A large "10" die is at the center at the left end. The right end shows a circular vignette with the seated Native American adapted from Chapman's The Ruins of Jamestown. He is on one side of a shield, an eagle is on top, and a well-dressed man holding a sextant is on the other side. This is a bold note and appears superior to the raw $10 remainder we sold in the 2004 FUN auction for $690. A dozen years is a long time, but a realization in that vicinity seems appropriate for this issued note with the exceptional Newman Collection pedigree. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society, Heritage Auctions Internet Sale (5/2016). (Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions, ha.com.) Realized $587.50

- Niles, MI - Bank of Niles $3 January 8, 1838 MI-300 G6, Lee-NIL-1-3. PCGS Very Fine 30. A perfect fit into a three dollar bill collection as this represents 1830s Rawdon, Wright & Hatch style at the time of the "wildcat" banking rampantly plaguing the state. A variant of the state seal is at the top between two "3" dies. At left, as noted in Durand's Interesting Notes About Vignettes II, is Freeman Rawdon's engraving of James Barry's 1772 painting, Venus Rising from the Sea. Liberty with a shield and eagle are in a frame in the right end panel. The Gothic title across balances this all beautifully. Bright and vivid. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society, Heritage Auctions Internet Sale (5/2016). (Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions, ha.com.) Realized $94.00

- Hudson, MI - A. Comstock Payable at People's Bank 10 Cents November 29, 1862 Lee-UNL. PCGS Very Fine 25 Apparent. This is a rarity, and the signature has excellent character. It fits into the Lee listed HUD-2 series as an unlisted denomination from the Expositor Print, Adrian imprint. Printed on white paper. A dog and safe motif is at top center, and a simple border is all around. The left end shows a Native American on a tall bluff gazing into the distance. A dog and safe motif is below the title. Noted with "Tape Repaired Splits; Mounting Remnants on Back." The first we have seen and a great rarity. Michigan scrip notes like this are tremendously undervalued compared with many genres of Obsolete currency. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society, Heritage Auctions Internet Sale (5/2016). (Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions, ha.com.) Realized $493.50

- Elk Rapids, MI - Dexter & Noble 10 Cents Undated (1870s) Lee-UNL. PCGS Very Fine 20. An incredible rarity from a town far north in Michigan. It is a rarely seen Third Issue Fractional currency mimic note. An oval portrait of Washington is at the center flanked by "10" counters. Scrollwork, flowers and other fancy elements are within the peripheral border. The issuer and town are engraved on the plate. The green back emblem shows the store name in the outer ring of a circle with more design elements in the inner ring and center. The note is not unique. We handled one in our September 2005 Long Beach sale where it realized $460 in raw Fine to Very Fine. A fascinating rarity and desirable as a Fractional currency mimic note. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society, Heritage Auctions Internet Sale (5/2016). (Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions, ha.com.) Realized $646.25

- Detroit, MI - Farmers & Mechanics' Bank of Michigan $5 July 1, 1864 MI-130 G160a, Lee-DET-3-20. Remainder. PCGS Very Choice New 64. This later variant, partially issued and dated, is very scarce. Printed from a gorgeous Rawdon, Wright, Hatch & Edson plate. Justice and Industry flank the large "5" in the vignette above the title. A cherubic Mercury peeks out from behind Justice. In the elaborate end panels, the elk, moose and eagle have escaped the confines of the state seal. A red FIVE protector is at bottom center. A perpendicular red overprint is at the right end.
