- Ann Arbor, MI - L. A. DeFrost payable at Wallace & Co. Bankers, Detroit and Miller, Davis & Webster Bankers, Ann Arbor 3 Cents January 1, 1863 Lee-ANN-8-1. PCGS Very Fine 20 Apparent. A fascinating Fractional currency mimic note in the style of the First Issue backs. The legends are rather compressed due to the small size and the incorporation of the two firms where the note was payable. Printed uniface on white paper. An undulating border encompasses all but the lithographer's name: Wm. Schuchman lith., Pittsburgh. The counter in the center shows a large, central "3" with 12 small "3" numerals that are placed to conform with the shape of the border. The issuer signature is engraved. Despite the noted "Small Edge and Internal Splits and Tears; Hinge on Back," superior to the only example we sold in January 2006. This is bold, charming and very rare. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society, Heritage Auctions Internet Sale (5/2016). (Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions, ha.com.) Realized $591.03

- Allegan, MI - Allegan Company $10 August 24, 1841 Lee-ALL-2-4. PCGS Very Fine 30 Apparent. A rare and unusual Michigan scrip note. The firm was founded in 1834 and closed in 1849 according to Wallace Lee's research. Printed on brown paper using crude lithography. Black border cuts are at the top and bottom, plus one stray at lower left under one of two border lines delineating the end panel. End panels have ovals with swirling patterns at top and bottom with scrollwork around oval vignettes of Commerce. The text is typeset, and there are four numerical counters in the corners, with the ones at the top larger. Inside the border cuts at each end is a mysterious, crossed out "D.A.M." The signature is uncertain, but it does match the style of the Lee plate note, which is serial number 14. The noted "Small Edge Nick at Top Left" does not interfere with the design elements. An interesting note, and the first we have cataloged. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society, Heritage Auctions Internet Sale (5/2016). (Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions, ha.com.) Realized $399.50
