- Allegan, MI - Allegan Company $10 August 24, 1841 Lee-ALL-2-4. PCGS Very Fine 30 Apparent. A rare and unusual Michigan scrip note. The firm was founded in 1834 and closed in 1849 according to Wallace Lee's research. Printed on brown paper using crude lithography. Black border cuts are at the top and bottom, plus one stray at lower left under one of two border lines delineating the end panel. End panels have ovals with swirling patterns at top and bottom with scrollwork around oval vignettes of Commerce. The text is typeset, and there are four numerical counters in the corners, with the ones at the top larger. Inside the border cuts at each end is a mysterious, crossed out "D.A.M." The signature is uncertain, but it does match the style of the Lee plate note, which is serial number 14. The noted "Small Edge Nick at Top Left" does not interfere with the design elements. An interesting note, and the first we have cataloged. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society, Heritage Auctions Internet Sale (5/2016). (Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions, ha.com.) Realized $399.50

- Wareham, MA - Wareham Bank $5 June 1, 1853 Spurious Issue MA-1255 S10. PCGS Choice About New 55PPQ. A spurious note, similar to others from different states, that was printed from a modified plate of the Lebanon Miami Banking Company, Ohio with a Draper [,] Toppan imprint. At top center, reclining Hope reaches upward, seemingly disturbing the path of the rainbow emanating from behind the clipper ship at sail. An angel drawing a map is in a circular frame at the left end. Roger Durand identifies the small child in the center of the right end as representing Jesus Christ. In stunning grade. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society, Heritage Auctions Internet Sale (5/2016). (Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions, ha.com.) Realized $105.75

- Springfield, MA - Pynchon Bank $5 April 28, 1853 MA-1185 G8b SENC. PCGS Very Fine 20 Apparent. The Newman Collection Massachusetts Obsolete currency albums have yielded many new discoveries, like this note. A SENC type from a bank that redeemed most of their notes, such as this rarity, before they became a National Bank in 1865. In this case, the successor redeemed the note in 1882, illustrating the bank's longstanding relationship with the community. This Danforth, Wright & Co. engraved note has a discrete "ABC" monogram for its post-1858 plate, despite its 1853 engraved date. At the center, three cherubic boys are shown at the wharf with various agricultural implements, and a little lamb as well. They curl around a large "5," which derives its stem from the stars and stripes held aloft. Flanking are "5" protectors. America is seated in a large "5" at left. Pynchon House, as engraved for the series, is at the right between "5" dies. The redemption stamp cancels noted by grading do not disturb the vignettes, and the "Small Edge Tears" have little effect on the charm of this note. An extraordinary Massachusetts note. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society, Heritage Auctions Internet Sale (5/2016). (Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions, ha.com.) Realized $540.50

- Salem, MA - Naumkeag Bank $1 18__ MA-1125 G8 SENC. Proof. PCGS Extremely Fine 45 Apparent. The firm of Terry, Pelton & Co. Boston & Providence is responsible for this lovely Proof. The rarer imprint has many vignettes that were custom orders for their banking clients, but this does not appear to be one of them. At the top is a wide coastal view with a variety of ships in the harbor. A city is seen on the opposite bank at the base of high hills, thus it does not reflect Salem's appearance. Both end panels have ONE above and below a central vignette. At left, seated Hebe holds an eagle in her left arm and an olive branch in her right. "State of Massachusetts" is arced above her. At right, a passenger train travels along. A gray ONE protector is across. Although hole punch canceled and noted with "Stains; Small Edge Tears," a striking Proof. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society, Heritage Auctions Internet Sale (5/2016). (Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions, ha.com.) Realized $646.25
