- Salem, MA - Naumkeag Bank $1 18__ MA-1125 G8 SENC. Proof. PCGS Extremely Fine 45 Apparent. The firm of Terry, Pelton & Co. Boston & Providence is responsible for this lovely Proof. The rarer imprint has many vignettes that were custom orders for their banking clients, but this does not appear to be one of them. At the top is a wide coastal view with a variety of ships in the harbor. A city is seen on the opposite bank at the base of high hills, thus it does not reflect Salem's appearance. Both end panels have ONE above and below a central vignette. At left, seated Hebe holds an eagle in her left arm and an olive branch in her right. "State of Massachusetts" is arced above her. At right, a passenger train travels along. A gray ONE protector is across. Although hole punch canceled and noted with "Stains; Small Edge Tears," a striking Proof. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society, Heritage Auctions Internet Sale (5/2016). (Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions, ha.com.) Realized $646.25

- Salem, MA - Exchange Bank $1 August 11, 1858 MA-1105 G8 SENC. PCGS Very Fine 30 Apparent. Genuine notes from Salem's Exchange Bank are exceedingly rare and are all designated SENC in Haxby. Amazingly, the Newman Collection contained four different denominations from the series, and this is the final denomination available. This is another very impressively designed and unusual rarity from Massachusetts, and it boasts vibrant condition. The $1 denomination from this dynamically vignetted series was printed from plates with dual imprints of the New England Bank Note Company and Patent Stereotype Steel Plate. Like the other denominations in this series, Athena is in the harbor seated upon a throne. Ships traverse the harbor to her left and right. End panels show "1" counters above and ONE counters below framed vignettes. Lafayette is at the left end and a veiled Moneta holding a key is at the right. A red protector ONE is across the bottom center. Noted as "Pen Cancelled," with two red pen cancellations seen and with "Mounting Remnants on Back." The plate notes in the Whitman Encyclopedia are held by the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem. A stunning note. The first three denominations we sold broke $2,000 with ease. A final opportunity to add this elusive design type and bank from the Newman Cabinet. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society, Heritage Auctions Internet Sale (5/2016). (Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions, ha.com.) Realized $822.50

- Pittsfield, MA - Pittsfield Bank $10 Raised from $1 June 10, 1861 MA-990 R16 UNL. PCGS Fine 15. Well performed, crafty workmanship raised this $10 from a genuine $1 note. The host note was beautifully printed by the American Bank Note Co. New York with a large green guilloche at the bottom and a green counter surround. The farmer at top left pumps water into a trough for thirsty animals. The Massachusetts state seal is to the right. At lower right is a male portrait. The raised "10" counters added and TEN DOLLARS over the color are very deceptive. A very vibrant note and perhaps a unique example. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society, Heritage Auctions Internet Sale (5/2016). (Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions, ha.com.) Realized $423.00

- Newton, MA - Newton Bank $100 October 1, 1855 Spurious Issue MA-930 UNL. PCGS Fine 15 Apparent. This striking and unusual note has a Rawdon, Wright, Hatch & Edson, Boston imprint. Properly, this is a spurious issue, and it is designed similarly to several others from New England. The listing is Haxby MA-930 C18, but is corrected in the Whitman Encyclopedia where this type is classified as spurious. Train and boat traffic are shown far below the screaming eagle perched on a high branch. A mechanic in classical garb is at the lower left. Plenty is at the lower right with crops. Counter dies are in the upper corners, and two "C" and one "100" protector are below. The noted "Mounting Remnants and Damage on Back; Small Edge Tears" do not affect the face severely. A desirable location, even as a false note. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society, Heritage Auctions Internet Sale (5/2016). (Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions, ha.com.) Realized $164.50

- New Bedford, MA - Bedford Commercial Bank $3 January 1, 1862 MA-880 G22a. PCGS Very Fine 25 Apparent. Very nicely styled, engraved and printed by Rawdon, Wright, Hatch & Edson/New England Bank Note Co. The $3 denomination, that was also redeemed, features a large spread-winged eagle with the capitol building in the background at top center. With the talons of one foot, he grips a rock in the sea. He firmly plants those of his other foot on the edge of the sideways Stars and Stripes shield that rests on the E PLURIBUS UNUM banner. Standing Liberty with capped pole and scroll are at the left end. There is one large THREE protector and two gray protectors behind. Despite the PCGS notation of, "Stamp Cancelled" and "Small Internal Splits; Pinholes," a dynamic note with strong signatures and much paper body. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society, Heritage Auctions Internet Sale (5/2016). (Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions, ha.com.) Realized $423.00

- New Bedford, MA - Bedford Commercial Bank $2 January 1, 1862 MA-880 G16b SENC. PCGS Fine 12 Apparent. A rare bank, and the Newman Collection contained a cache of different rare types for collectors to select from. The bank redeemed most of their notes, and there is a faint trace on the face of an oval redemption stamping at the right end. The late notes were engraved and printed by Rawdon, Wright, Hatch & Edson/New England Bank Note Co., and this has an "ABC" monogram. As befits this maritime trade location, a seated allegorical female with agricultural goods is at the shore with ships behind at top center. A bonneted farm woman is at lower left. At right, ships sail off into the distance. There are two red "2" protectors. Noted as: "Stained on Back at Right; Small Edge Splits." A very rare issued note. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society, Heritage Auctions Internet Sale (5/2016). (Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions, ha.com.) Realized $235.00
