- New Bedford, MA - Bedford Commercial Bank $2 January 1, 1862 MA-880 G16b SENC. PCGS Fine 12 Apparent. A rare bank, and the Newman Collection contained a cache of different rare types for collectors to select from. The bank redeemed most of their notes, and there is a faint trace on the face of an oval redemption stamping at the right end. The late notes were engraved and printed by Rawdon, Wright, Hatch & Edson/New England Bank Note Co., and this has an "ABC" monogram. As befits this maritime trade location, a seated allegorical female with agricultural goods is at the shore with ships behind at top center. A bonneted farm woman is at lower left. At right, ships sail off into the distance. There are two red "2" protectors. Noted as: "Stained on Back at Right; Small Edge Splits." A very rare issued note. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society, Heritage Auctions Internet Sale (5/2016). (Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions, ha.com.) Realized $235.00

- Nantucket, MA - Nantucket Bank $3 May 10, 1806 Contemporary Counterfeit MA-855 C14, Newman Page 220. PCGS Very Fine 30 Apparent. A very scarce type listed in The Early Paper Money of America (Fifth Edition), by Eric P. Newman on page 220, where it is the plate note. The early bank was founded in 1795, but had its affairs settled by 1816. We have never encountered a genuine note or a proof from the bank. This type is one of the most intriguing from the early Obsolete note-issuing period. This note shows a perpendicular, spouting whale on which is a downward-facing "3" balanced by the upward facing "3" at the right end. The end panel at left shows BANK, which looks like it was fashioned from rope. Counters with the number, text, and Roman numerals are on differently shaped, shaded backgrounds. Texts and obligations are across. "Pen Cancelled" with "Tape Repaired Edge Tears." However, this is an iconic type, and the Newman plate note stature adds to its desirability. An essential member of this early banking period's notes. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society, Heritage Auctions Internet Sale (5/2016). (Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions, ha.com.) Realized $1410.00

- Holliston, MA - Holliston Bank $1 October 18, 1854 MA-690 G2 SENC. PCGS Very Fine 20. This bank's genuine notes were all "SENC" in Haxby. If not for the appearance of proofs in the 1990 American Bank Notre Company Archive sale, they might have stayed that way. However, this is the only genuine issued note we have cataloged, and its state of preservation is a marvel. A well-styled note by Bald, Adams/Bald, Cousland showing a milkmaid and farm animals at top center. At lower left is a portrait of Thomas Hollis, Esq., According to hollistonhistoricalsociety.org, "The name [of the town] was taken in honor of Thomas Hollis, Esq. of London, England, a benefactor of Harvard College." An oval portrait of Henry Clay is at the lower right. Dazzling denomination dies are in the upper corners. A very impressive note for the Massachusetts specialist who appreciates great issued note rarities. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society, Heritage Auctions Internet Sale (5/2016). (Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions, ha.com.) Realized $940.00

- Falmouth, MA - Falmouth Bank $5 November 13, 1855 Spurious Issue MA-595 S10. PCGS Very Fine 20. Though this is a spurious note, it is very rare, as attested by a lack of illustration in Haxby and lack of confirmation in the Whitman Encyclopedia. The note has an imprint of New England Bank Note Co., Boston at the bottom left, unknown data in both references. A large, gray "5" dominates the face of this interesting note. At the upper left, a seated man in classical garb holds a stylus and a scroll with "1620" on it. As such, we can infer the Mayflower sails away in the background, appropriate for a Cape Cod issuer. A "V" block is below. Washington's portrait is at the right end in an elaborate counter frame with scrollwork above and below. An important note from Cape Cod. Obtaining a genuine note from the bank would be an achievement. We have cataloged only two spurious notes from here, and both were different types. This has everything going for it: location, rarity and condition. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society, Heritage Auctions Internet Sale (5/2016). (Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions, ha.com.) Realized $352.50

- Conway, MA - Conway Bank $2 May 1, 1862 MA-500 G4b SENC. PCGS Very Fine 25. Until the 1990 American Banknote Company Archive auction, notes from Conway were next to impossible to find. The $20 notes from the bank feature George Baldwin's Santa Clause vignette and were unknown until then. This issued $2 note engraved by Bald, Cousland & Co. with a later "ABC" monogram is impressive. The white drop-shadowed TWO at the center appears to float over the dizzying dies behind it. The title is bold and the "2" protectors are quite vibrant. At left, a seated mechanic is joined by a windblown sailor who holds a sextant and the stars and stripes flag. At right, two farm girls with bustled skirts hold aloft a sheaf of hay like caryatids. We know of only two confirmed issued notes (a $1 and a $3) from the bank, both in the same strongly held collection; they are illustrated in the Whitman Encyclopedia. Excellent paper body and margins. The style is exceptional. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society, Heritage Auctions Internet Sale (5/2016).
