- Princess Anne, MD - Bank of Somerset $5 May 18, 1814 MD-285 G24, Shank 106.3.9. PCGS Fine 12. This is a sharp-looking example from a scarce bank. Also engraved by Murray, Draper, Fairman & Co., this note shows a large building at top center with different varieties of trees beside and behind it. A "5" counter is to the left and a "V" counter is to the right. The decorative end panels show FIVE at left and MARYLAND at right. An excellent type note. Ex: Eric P. - Princess Anne, MD - Bank of Somerset $2 May 10, 1815 MD-285 G20, Shank 106.3.6. PCGS Fine 15 Apparent. An uncommon bank and well-styled series. On this Murray, Draper, Fairman & Co. note, the classically dressed figure at top center kneels, appearing to hide behind an outcropping of rock. TWO counters are flanking, and a "2" is at the base. Decorative end panels show MARYLAND at left and TWO DOLLARS at right. Noted as Apparent due to "Missing LL Corner; Small Edge Splits; Pinholes." We have handled several denominations from the bank, but this $2 is rarer and the first we have cataloged. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society, Heritage Auctions Internet Sale (5/2016). (Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions, ha.com.) Realized $305.50

- Princess Anne, MD - Eastern Shore Rail Road Company $20 18__ Shank 106.2.5. Remainder. PCGS Very Fine 20 Apparent. A very distinctively engraved note by R. G. Harrison Sc., Philad. with some style similarities to Charles Toppan. The issuer was not present in the Armand Shank Collection, which attests to the rarity of these notes. This early railroad vignette shows passengers both in and on top of the carriages as the train prepares to travel through a pass in the rocky landscape. A framed portrait of Washington is in the end panel at left, between two "20" counters. Standing Washington occupies most of the right end, with an arced TWENTY above his head. He looks toward the viewer as he gestures to the title. Although designated Apparent due to being "Stained" and having "Small Rust Stains," it is quite charming and superior to the one example we have cataloged. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society, Heritage Auctions Internet Sale (5/2016). (Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions, ha.com.) Realized $2350.00

This is a rarer, early series payable in Baltimore and engraved by Richard Harrison, A team of four yoked oxen pulls the plow as the farmer guides it at top center. In the far distance, a lake and mountain view are shown. Numerical counters are flanking the vignette. The title and obligations are across. - Port Deposit, MD - Cecil Bank $1 May 2, 1861 MD-275 G2b, Shank 102.4.2. PCGS Fine 15 Apparent. The bank redeemed most of their notes when they became the Cecil National Bank in 1865. A great layout engraved by the American Bank Note Company. At top center, a spread-winged eagle standing on the stars and stripes shield holds the E. PLURIBUS UNUM banner in its beak. Far behind, a train and steamships travel in the opposite direction. A sailor holding the American flag is at left under a ONE counter. An oval portrait of a woman is between numerical counters with sculptural frames. "Minor Rust Stains" are the reason for the Apparent designation and we would stress that they are minor. Superior to the example we sold in the 2005 St. Louis CSNS sale for $1,380 graded raw Very Good to Fine. An attractive issued note rarity. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society, Heritage Auctions Internet Sale (5/2016). (Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions, ha.com.) Realized $763.75

- Havre de Grace, MD - Havre de Grace Bank $1 October 7, 1815 MD-250 G14, Shank 63.4.7. PCGS Fine 15. The Newman Collection has several of the very rare War of 1812 era emergency notes that were printed without vignettes. This is a copperplate engraving with a W. Harrison imprint. It is a Shank Maryland reference plate note, illustrated on page 418. Delicate script combines with Gothic text for an elegant appearance. At the left end, a ONE counter is in an oval on a patterned rectangular background. A numerical counter is at the top, on the left side. This is very rare, and the grade is excellent for a note of this genre. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society, Heritage Auctions Internet Sale (5/2016). (Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions, ha.com.) Realized $258.50
