- Havre de Grace, MD - Havre de Grace Bank $1 October 7, 1815 MD-250 G14, Shank 63.4.7. PCGS Fine 15. The Newman Collection has several of the very rare War of 1812 era emergency notes that were printed without vignettes. This is a copperplate engraving with a W. Harrison imprint. It is a Shank Maryland reference plate note, illustrated on page 418. Delicate script combines with Gothic text for an elegant appearance. At the left end, a ONE counter is in an oval on a patterned rectangular background. A numerical counter is at the top, on the left side. This is very rare, and the grade is excellent for a note of this genre. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society, Heritage Auctions Internet Sale (5/2016). (Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions, ha.com.) Realized $258.50

- Frederick, MD - Farmers Bank of Maryland, Branch in Frederick $100 May 20, 1856 Spurious Issue MD-5 S20, Shank 2.3.88S. PCGS Very Fine 25 Apparent. This is an unusual spurious note type and branch payable with a written "their Bank in Frederick" under the textual denomination. The imprint is Danforth, Bald & Co., though the style is wrong when compared to similar imprinted notes from the period. The "100" protector is a vibrant red. Counters are at upper left and lower right. At lower left, a farm boy with a dreamy expression reclines by a tall haystack. At the upper right, a train trailing black smoke travels forward. The Apparent designation is due to "Minor Internal Damage and Tears; Minor Rust Stains." Well margined with bold color. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society, Heritage Auctions Internet Sale (5/2016). (Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions, ha.com.) Realized $470.00

- Frederick, MD - Mayor, Alderman & Common Council [City] of Frederick, payable at Farmers' and Mechanics' Bank of Frederick Co. 25 Cents April __, 1840 Shank 51.1.17. Remainder. PCGS About New 50 Apparent. A very scarce series of notes with most observed being unissued like this. No imprint, but with the Philadelphia style of Morris. Bold black printing in the counter and seal enliven this lovely note. Agriculture and Mechanics in classical dress are at top center; at right is the reverse of a Spanish Colonial coin. The left end panel shows a farm woman taking a rest. Hope, resting on her anchor as her drapery swirls about, is in the right end panel. Grading notes "Tape Repaired Edge Tear at Bottom Left," but this is not distracting. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society, Heritage Auctions Internet Sale (5/2016). (Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions, ha.com.) Realized $74.00

- Ellicotts Mills, MD - Patapsco Bank of Maryland 25 Cents Certificate of Deposit April 19, 1838 MD-200 UNL, Shank 43.2.4. PCGS Extremely Fine 45. The bank issued demand notes and also these "deposited in this Bank" types that Haxby did not list. A transportation vignette on this Draper, Toppan, Longacre & Co. note is featured at top center under the arced title. Two early passenger trains have just passed one another as they travel past the town. A steamship is in the far distance. Numerical counters are in the top corners. At the bottom, in circular frames, are Liberty and an eagle. A very sharp-grade example of this type. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society, Heritage Auctions Internet Sale (5/2016). (Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions, ha.com.) Realized $211.50

- Baltimore, MD - Bank of the United States (the Second) Office of Discount & Deposit $50 November 18, 1828 Contemporary Counterfeit US-2 C62, Shank 5.159.7. PCGS Very Fine 20 Apparent. The Bank of the United States notes present perhaps the most complex series of Obsolete notes and are worthy of their own reference book. The Newman Collection contains numerous branch locations, Demand, Cashier and Post Note types from all three incarnations of the bank: First, Second and Third. This contemporary counterfeit mimics the genuine plate better than some other branch notes we have seen; these notes were deceptive in the period. At top center is an eagle. End panels show portraits (Franklin at left and Washington at right), eagles and cameo profiles. The false signature of Nicholas Biddle as president is at the bottom right. The Apparent designation is due to "Edge Splits, Tears, and Damage; Repairs; Pieces Replaced." Endorsed on the verso and showing though slightly to the face. This serial number 1930 note is the Shank Maryland reference book plate note on page 285. Though a contemporary counterfeit, this is a rare type with sharp printing clarity. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society, Heritage Auctions Internet Sale (5/2016). (Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions, ha.com.) Realized $1116.25

- Baltimore, MD - Peoples Bank $1 Certificate of Deposit January 1, 1862 MD-110 UNL, Shank 5.134.1. PCGS Fine 15 Apparent. A mysterious note, listed in Shank as possibly spurious. The strong engraving by Hufty & Danforth, and the obligation above the title, "has deposited in," make us believe this is a genuine certificate of deposit type that circulated "on demand" as noted at the bottom. A charming vignette appears at top center. Seated Agriculture with wheat, a plow, and crops is in the foreground, and a train passes by in the far distance. Sculptural details form the frame around the square half-length portrait of a woman embroidering at the left and provide the background for the counters above and below. A tall sculptural counter is at the right with ONE on a diagonal band and a denomination block is below. Noted as Apparent due to "Rust Stains." A fascinating rarity. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society, Heritage Auctions Internet Sale (5/2016). (Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions, ha.com.) Realized $111.63
