- Portland, (Maine District) - Portland Bank $1 September 1, 1809 ME-1020 G24 SENC, Wait-232. PCGS Very Fine 20 Apparent. This Maine District note is from the first bank authorized there in 1799. This is a very rare note, so much so that no examples from the series are illustrated in the Whitman Encyclopedia. The Pullen Collection had only a low-grade $2 note from the series. This Perkins Patent Stereotype Steel Plate note shows an oval garland chain with links of flowers alternating with ONEs. The numerical denomination appears in all four corners. Text and obligations are across. "One Dollar" in micro-lettered scrip is across most of the face. "Small Edge Tears; Stains" are noted by grading. Certainly a sleeper for the specialist. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society, Heritage Auctions Internet Sale (5/2016). (Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions, ha.com.) Realized $94.00

- North Berwick, ME - North Berwick Bank $1 May 15, 1860 ME-400 G2a SENC, Wait-2. PCGS Fine 15 Apparent. Issued notes and proofs from this title are rare. We have handled only one $1 issued note, the Norman Pullen Collection example, which is inferior to this by far. Engraved and printed by the American Bank Note Company, this note boasts a rarely seen and wonderfully American Finding the Red Ear central vignette. Three couples are shown playing this frontier romantic game that resulted in a kiss for the winner. The lucky gentleman holds his "red ear" of corn aloft, but appears to be rebuffed by his chosen lady. In the tall vignette above the ONE counter at the left end, a standing farmer drinks from a jug. At lower right, beneath a "1" counter, is Sewing Girl or The Sewing Machine. It shows a woman in a voluminous dress, seated on an elegant chair, as she intently operates a sewing machine. Roger Durand attributes the original art to genre painter Francis W. Edmonds. June 2012 research notes from the Smithsonian Art Museum report that Edmonds was a New York City banker as well as an artist, and was cashier of the Mechanic's Bank from 1839-1855. Grading notes a "Small Edge Tear at Left," a minor detraction. A lovely Maine issued note rarity. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society, Heritage Auctions Internet Sale (5/2016). (Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions, ha.com.) Realized $1292.50

- Hallowell, (Maine District) - Kennebec Bank $10 18__ ME-50 G36, Wait-47. Proof. PCGS About New 50 Apparent. This Maine District note has its earlier Massachusetts notes listed under Augusta where the bank was founded. An elegant Abner Reed proof on India paper, but without an imprint as noted by George Wait. At top center, Justice, holding her scales aloft, reclines against a pillar showing "10" to indicate the denomination. A wide cityscape is seen on the opposite shore, and an islet with two simple houses is between. Flanking are "10" counters, and an "X" counter is at bottom center. End panels show complex beading, floral elements, and organic patterns. The Apparent notation is for "Minor Stains" that little affect this charming note. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society, Heritage Auctions Internet Sale (5/2016). (Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions, ha.com.) Realized $235.00

- Hallowell, ME - Kennebec Bank $1 September 7, 1824 ME-365 G4, Wait-41. PCGS Very Fine 20. This note was issued after Maine was admitted as a state, and the bank existed in this form for only six years. The New England Bank Note Co./Patent Stereotype Steel Plate engraving merits much plate detail study on this issued note. Exemplifying the craftsmanship of the Perkins patents, a beautifully configured oval of vines and links encloses the title, obligations and location. This is nicknamed the "Watermelon" style in reference works. At the right end, in the center, CHECK LETTER curves around the "A" on a patterned background. End panels show patterned semi-circular devices. This is an underrated type and is in high grade. The signatures and date are especially sharp. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society, Heritage Auctions Internet Sale (5/2016). (Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions, ha.com.) Realized $69.00

- Gardiner, ME - E. D. Haley-Commission Scrip $1 Undated (1870s) Wait-21. PCGS Very Fine 30. This Tiffany Commission scrip note served as advertising for E.D. Haley's dry goods and carpets. It is the George Wait Maine reference book plate note, illustrated face and back, on page 139. At the center, a detailed wharf scene shows commercial goods being transported. The stern of the ship at right shows the name NYMPH. At left, crowned America in classical garb holds the billowing stars and stripes with her right hand, and holds her left above her eyes as she peers into the distance. The charming little girl at lower right holds firmly onto a book. An upside-down corner penciled notation (old pedigree?) is at lower left on the back. There are few Commission scrip notes from Maine and this is a rare dollar-denominated example. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society, Heritage Auctions Internet Sale (5/2016). (Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions, ha.com.) Realized $164.50

- Bangor, ME - Bank of the State of Maine $5 August 1, 1859 ME-130 G8b, Wait-16. PCGS Very Fine 25 Apparent. Although this is a rare Maine bank, attractive issued notes are available with reasonable effort. A well-styled series by Toppan, Carpenter, Casilear & Co. Under the arced title, the denomination and red "5" protectors form a central cartouche for the state's coat of arms. Maine.gov describes it as a shield with a pine tree and moose (although one might not perceive it as being that animal). A farmer with a scythe and sailor with sextant are supporters, and the land and sea are represented behind. The North Star is at the crest, the motto is DIRIGO (I lead), and the state name is on the banner at the bottom. Allegorical females in the upper corners hold "5" counters: Agriculture at left and Commerce at right. Textual counters are in the lower corners. Two stamp cancels are on the back of the note, and likely this note was redeemed. Trimmed closely in the typical "New England" manner. Despite the noted "Stamp Cancelled, Hinge Repaired Edge and Internal Tears; Minor Rust Stains," it is still vibrant. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society, Heritage Auctions Internet Sale (5/2016). (Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions, ha.com.) Realized $387.75
