- Bangor, ME - Bank of the State of Maine $5 August 1, 1859 ME-130 G8b, Wait-16. PCGS Very Fine 25 Apparent. Although this is a rare Maine bank, attractive issued notes are available with reasonable effort. A well-styled series by Toppan, Carpenter, Casilear & Co. Under the arced title, the denomination and red "5" protectors form a central cartouche for the state's coat of arms. Maine.gov describes it as a shield with a pine tree and moose (although one might not perceive it as being that animal). A farmer with a scythe and sailor with sextant are supporters, and the land and sea are represented behind. The North Star is at the crest, the motto is DIRIGO (I lead), and the state name is on the banner at the bottom. Allegorical females in the upper corners hold "5" counters: Agriculture at left and Commerce at right. Textual counters are in the lower corners. Two stamp cancels are on the back of the note, and likely this note was redeemed. Trimmed closely in the typical "New England" manner. Despite the noted "Stamp Cancelled, Hinge Repaired Edge and Internal Tears; Minor Rust Stains," it is still vibrant. Ex: Eric P. - Bangor, ME - Grocers Bank $5 September 18, 1854 ME-80 G8a, Wait-114 PCGS Very Fine 20 Apparent. This very scarce series is beautifully engraved by Rawdon, Wright, Hatch & Edson/New England Bank Note Co. George Washington is dramatically posed under the curving FIVE at top left. With one foot resting on a cannon trail and his sword in his right hand, he stretches out his left arm, gesturing toward the title. The large, spread-winged eagle in the foreground at lower right dwarfs the capitol building in the background. With the talons of one foot, he grips the rock in the sea. He firmly plants those of his other foot on the edge of the sideways Stars and Stripes shield that rests on the E PLURIBUS UNUM banner. Light scrollwork enhances the text. A "5" counter is at upper right. Right of center, the textual denomination is outlined by the same gray shade of the numerical counter behind. Although noted with "Minor Damage in LR Corner; Minor Stains" by grading, this piece has a very dynamic layout and is rarely encountered in higher grade. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society, Heritage Auctions Internet Sale (5/2016). (Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions, ha.com.) Realized $170.38

- Castine, (Maine District) - Castine Bank $2 18__ ME-465 G32, Wait-4. Proof. PCGS Choice About New 55 Apparent. The reference listings for notes from the Maine District of Massachusetts are confusing. Traditionally, they were listed by Wait as Maine notes, which is how Eric P. Newman collected them. This Abner Reed series is very charming. An India paper proof with a bold impression. Sails are billowing as the ships travel near the coastline in the vignette at top center. The various shades of the clouds in the stormy skies are detailed by the skillful engraving of Reed. Numerical counters are flanking, and a TWO counter is below. End panels show the beading and other intricate details often produced by the firm. Despite the Apparent "Minor Stains" mentioned by the grading service, a stately looking note. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society, Heritage Auctions Internet Sale (5/2016). (Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions, ha.com.) Realized $235.00
