- New Orleans, LA - Municipality No. One (Premiere Muncipalit?) $4/Quatre Piastres 1837 (Act of June 24, 1837). PCGS Fine 12 Apparent. The New Orleans Municipality numbered series notes from this period are complex, and many of the note rarities are not yet appreciated by collectors. This odd denomination type is engraved from the genuine plates by Burton, Gurley, Edmonds & Co., N.Y. A seated classical male with plowshare and bundled wheat is under the arced French title, PREMEIRE MUNCIPALIT?. The obligations are under the vignette. At far left is standing Washington. At the right end is the French denomination QUATRE PIASTRES on lathe work. The plain back has the countersignature of the comptroller perpendicularly. This style was also counterfeited in the period, but rather crudely (see Newman Part VII, October 2015, lot 19456), with engraved signatures, no imprint and washy details. Noted with "Edge Tears; Repair on Back" by grading. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society, Heritage Auctions Internet Sale (5/2016). (Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions, ha.com.) Realized $587.50

- New Orleans, LA - City of New Orleans $3 Oct. 1, 1861. PCGS Very Fine 20. This intriguing Confederate controlled City of New Orleans $3 is in choice condition. Notes using this design style featured green, red, and in this case, a large blue protector THREE across the bottom center. At the upper right is a train heading west and at the far left a female vignette adapted from an 1830s Durand & Company style. The note was printed by Douglas, Engr. on the back of engraved 1830s notes we have not attributed fully. They are post notes and appear to be payable at "[Apalachicol]a, Florida," (?) with a partial title that is [Bank of the Uni]ted States/[New]-York." A very well margined and sharp-looking example. This is another Newman Collection Louisiana note that should be appreciated for its excellent state of preservation. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society, Heritage Auctions Internet Sale (5/2016). (Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions, ha.com.) Realized $822.50

- New Orleans, LA - City Bank of New Orleans $100 Jan. 23, 1847 LA-20 G48c. PCGS Very Fine 20. Notes from the later series of City Bank notes engraved by Rawdon, Wright, Hatch & Edson using color backs are more frequently seen than the earlier notes. Notes from this series of notes are very scarce in high grades. This is a very bold example with strong ship vignette details at top center. At each end is a perpendicular ONE HUNDRED on shaded lathe work facing inward. An ornate blue "C" protector is at bottom center. The golden yellow security back has a wide counter in the center and "C" dies at each end. A bright and very pleasant representative from the bank, and underrated in this condition. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society, Heritage Auctions Internet Sale (5/2016). (Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions, ha.com.) Realized $1997.50

- New Orleans, LA - City Bank of New Orleans $10 March 12, 1832 LA-20 G22. PCGS Very Good 10 Apparent. This is a much rarer issued note from the Draper, Underwood, Bald & Spencer engraved series. At top center an eagle is perched on a rocky promontory flanked by "10" square block dies. Identical end panels have corner medallion head dies and denomination counters in between. Noted are some "Small Holes" that do not affect the vignettes. Well detailed with nicely penned accomplishments for the technical grade. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society, Heritage Auctions Internet Sale (5/2016). (Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions, ha.com.) Realized $705.00

- New Orleans, LA - Citizens' Bank of Louisiana $10 Dec. 1, 1859 Contemporary Counterfeit LA-15 C22a. PCGS Very Fine 30 Apparent. The diagnostics of this American Bank Note Company imprint counterfeit type are rather crude when observed in this vibrant condition. The vignettes of the reclining sailor at center, Washington at lower left and girl at lower right are all poorly executed on this plate. In green are the protector, guilloche and counters flanking the main vignette. The bright orange back, with a ship in the center flanked by wharf goods on each side, also lacks strong details. The French bank title is along the bottom. Noted are some "Minor Stains." This is a very scarce note, and the vibrant condition makes it most interesting for study. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society, Heritage Auctions Internet Sale (5/2016). (Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions, ha.com.) Realized $376.00

- New Orleans, LA - Citizens' Bank of Louisiana $10 Jan. 1, 1856 Contemporary Counterfeit LA-15 C20b. PCGS Fine 12 Apparent. A second example of this "Dix" note, and also likely a contemporary counterfeit, but with a slightly different back style variant. This also copies the Rawdon, Wright, Hatch, & Edson, New-Orleans "C" face plate position with corresponding brown back. A female allegorical figure of Liberty and Plenty is at the upper right. To the left is a die with DIX. At the left end, a perpendicular TEN is on shaded lathe work, and at the right end is an ornate "X." A widely spaced, blue cursive protector TEN is across the bottom center. The brown back uses elements from the face such as the TEN panels, now at each end, at center, the ornate "X" is flanked by the DIX dies. This style back also has the plate letter and serial number added along the top. Noted with some "Repaired Edge Tears," and we will add there is some soiling on both sides. This an interesting comparison note with the LA-15 C20a from the Newman Collection offered here for study and observational purposes. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society, Heritage Auctions Internet Sale (5/2016). (Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions, ha.com.) Realized $188.00
