- New Orleans, LA - Citizens' Bank of Louisiana $10 Jan. 1, 1856 Contemporary Counterfeit LA-15 C20b. PCGS Fine 12 Apparent. A second example of this "Dix" note, and also likely a contemporary counterfeit, but with a slightly different back style variant. This also copies the Rawdon, Wright, Hatch, & Edson, New-Orleans "C" face plate position with corresponding brown back. A female allegorical figure of Liberty and Plenty is at the upper right. To the left is a die with DIX. At the left end, a perpendicular TEN is on shaded lathe work, and at the right end is an ornate "X." A widely spaced, blue cursive protector TEN is across the bottom center. The brown back uses elements from the face such as the TEN panels, now at each end, at center, the ornate "X" is flanked by the DIX dies. This style back also has the plate letter and serial number added along the top. Noted with some "Repaired Edge Tears," and we will add there is some soiling on both sides. This an interesting comparison note with the LA-15 C20a from the Newman Collection offered here for study and observational purposes. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society, Heritage Auctions Internet Sale (5/2016). (Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions, ha.com.) Realized $188.00

- New Orleans, LA - Citizens' Bank of Louisiana $10 Jan. 4, 1856 Contemporary Counterfeit LA-15 C20a. PCGS Fine 15. This is a classic title and style from New Orleans and an earlier "Dix Note" type. Likely a contemporary counterfeit note copying the Rawdon, Wright, Hatch, & Edson, New-Orleans "C" face plate position with corresponding brown back. A female allegorical figure representing Liberty and Plenty is at the upper right. To the left is a die with DIX. At the left end, a perpendicular TEN is on shaded lathe work, and at the right end, an ornate "X." A widely spaced, blue cursive protector TEN is across the bottom center. The brown back uses elements from the face such as the TEN panels, now at each end, and at center, the ornate "X" is flanked by the DIX dies. Missing from the back are a plate letter and serial number. This serial number 7676 note should be examined closely as it exhibits many diagnostics seen on genuine Obsolete notes. Overall, bright from the face and a pleasing example. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society, Heritage Auctions Internet Sale (5/2016). (Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions, ha.com.) Realized $235.00

- New Orleans, LA - "I" Private Issuer [?] "Promise to Pay the Bearer... payable at the Counting House of "Bulkley" & Co. in McKinney or Jefferson, Texas" $2 April 1, 1862 Medlar-UNL. PCGS Fine 15 Apparent. This is an extremely rare and mysterious Civil War Louisiana-Texas tie scrip note that appears to be a new discovery. It was issued from New Orleans and payable at two "Counting House" locations in Texas. The red issuer [the "I"] signature on the note is difficult to read. The Medlar Texas reference lists a 25 cents note, in a smaller format and differently styled, but with similar payable obligations. That note has an engraved "Beckly & Co." and a signature of Beckly that seems to be a contradiction with this note and its payable notation, but the similarity of names appears to be more than a coincidence. The style and format used here on this dollar denominated note is similar to other Texas tie notes from New Orleans and payable in Jefferson, Texas. Printed on the back of brown rag paper Southern Pacific Railroad Company bonds. At the center are: the denomination across, "2" in an ornate cartouche at the top and the complex obligations. The upside-down text under the bottom border line was originally part of the bond paper used. Each end has an intricate panel with oval inset for a perpendicular vignette: a train at the left and steamboat at the right. Noted with "Edge Tears and Damage at Left." This intriguing note is worthy of additional study, and its rarity clearly stands on its own. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society, Heritage Auctions Internet Sale (5/2016). (Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions, ha.com.) Realized $2232.50

- New Iberia, LA - Confederate Hotel 25 Cents Sept. 26, 1862. PCGS Fine 12 Apparent. This is another rarity and an interesting occupational title. It is similar to the example we cataloged from the Newman Collection in Part VII, but printed on thin brown rag paper with the imprint of L.T. Burnett, Printer. The title is at the top and obligations across the center, with the engraved city and date. The left end floral pattern encloses the cartouche showing "25 CENTS." At the right end, the floral pattern edge matches the left. A red protector "25 Cts." is at center. Burnett did much printing in the area at this time, and the similarity of his style and vignettes can be seen on a few different issues cataloged in that Newman Collection Part VII sale. There are some noted "Edge Splits," but the protector color is bold and the signature strong. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society, Heritage Auctions Internet Sale (5/2016). (Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions, ha.com.) Realized $1292.50

- Natchitoches, LA - Parish of Natchitoches $10 August 12, 1862. PCGS Very Fine 30 Apparent. A rare parish and an attractive type example printed on thin brown rag paper. Titles and obligations are in between end panels. At the left is cartouche formed by two ornate columns enclosing the "receivable" part of the obligation. At the right end is a perpendicular TEN in an ornate cartouche. Noted with "Edge Damage at Bottom; Minor Ink Erosion," but both are trivial faults on this pleasing example. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society, Heritage Auctions Internet Sale (5/2016). (Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions, ha.com.) Realized $493.50
