- Natchitoches, LA - Parish of Natchitoches $10 August 12, 1862. PCGS Very Fine 30 Apparent. A rare parish and an attractive type example printed on thin brown rag paper. Titles and obligations are in between end panels. At the left is cartouche formed by two ornate columns enclosing the "receivable" part of the obligation. At the right end is a perpendicular TEN in an ornate cartouche. Noted with "Edge Damage at Bottom; Minor Ink Erosion," but both are trivial faults on this pleasing example. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society, Heritage Auctions Internet Sale (5/2016). (Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions, ha.com.) Realized $493.50

- Natchitoches, LA - Corporation of Natchitoches $3 Certificate of Deposit April 16, 1862. PCGS Fine 12 Apparent. This is a rarity, and only the second we have handled. Printed on the very thin brown rag paper used frequently for scrip notes from Louisiana in the period. At the center is a small vignette of a water pump. A very detailed obligation surrounds the vignettes with a bold "Three" at left and "3" at the right. The right end has fine text for the notes being backed by "N.O. Bank Bills and Confederate Treasury Notes" inside a pattern border. The note is "Stained," as mentioned on the encapsulation, but this is scattered foxing. The left end is roughly shaved off where the authorization act and pattern border was. This is illustrated by the only other example we auctioned in April 2013 for $1,762.50 graded PCGS Fine 15. That broadly margined note is superior, but this is seldom encountered and very collectible. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society, Heritage Auctions Internet Sale (5/2016). (Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions, ha.com.) Realized $587.50

- Franklin, LA - Parish of St. Mary $5 Aug. 5, 1862. PCGS Very Fine 30. There are several series of notes from this available parish. This is a high-grade example from the August 5, 1862 written date series printed on thin paper. These were often subject to chips and ink corrosion flaws making high-grade notes rare. At top center is a train rounding a bank between "V" counters. At the left end, perpendicular FIVE DOLLARS is inside a pattern bordered cartouche. A red protector FIVE is in the lower half. Broadly margined and bright. This is the finest grade example from the series we have cataloged, and would fit perfectly in a parish note type set. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society, Heritage Auctions Internet Sale (5/2016). (Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions, ha.com.) Realized $705.00

- Clinton, LA - Clinton & Port Hudson Rail Road Co. 50 Cents Sept. 1, 1862. PCGS Very Good 10 Apparent. A rare Civil War era note from the railroad. The earlier 1830s engraved notes from the title are Haxby listed banknotes. Ornate borders are all around, including cartouches at the ends with perpendicular 50 CENTS in bold type. These were payable in "Confederate States Notes." Mentioned by grading are "Edge and Internal Splits; Backed," which appears contemporary to extend circulation use. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society, Heritage Auctions Internet Sale (5/2016). (Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions, ha.com.) Realized $376.00

- Alexandria, LA - Corporation of the Town of Alexandria 50 Cents September, 1862. PCGS Very Good 8 Apparent. A rare town issuer and series we have not cataloged. Printed on thin grayish-blue paper. Above the title is a horse racing scene at the furious finish (right to left, in the European fashion) as the riders approach a raised judges stand. Flanking are "50" counters. Two signatures are fairly clear, though this example has "Splits, Pieces Missing; Backed" noted. Over 90% of this is present, and the backing helped stabilize the note for further circulation. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society, Heritage Auctions Internet Sale (5/2016). (Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions, ha.com.) Realized $199.75
