- Alexandria, LA - Corporation of the Town of Alexandria 50 Cents September, 1862. PCGS Very Good 8 Apparent. A rare town issuer and series we have not cataloged. Printed on thin grayish-blue paper. Above the title is a horse racing scene at the furious finish (right to left, in the European fashion) as the riders approach a raised judges stand. Flanking are "50" counters. Two signatures are fairly clear, though this example has "Splits, Pieces Missing; Backed" noted. Over 90% of this is present, and the backing helped stabilize the note for further circulation. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society, Heritage Auctions Internet Sale (5/2016). (Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions, ha.com.) Realized $199.75

- Shelbyville, KY - Bank of Ashland, Branch at Shelbyville $20 June 27, 1857 Contemporary Counterfeit KY-5 C24a, Hughes 7var. PCGS Very Fine 25 Apparent. The full yellow-gold tint used on this series is quite striking. This is a well-made contemporary counterfeit plate of the Toppan, Carpenter & Co. designs. The tint plate TWENTY outline contrasts well with the color. At the top left is very wide vignette of a train with a broad perspective in the background. Henry Clay is at the lower right and is perhaps the crudest detail on the note. Noted with a small patch of "Tape on Back" that does not affect the face's vibrancy. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society, Heritage Auctions Internet Sale (5/2016). (Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions, ha.com.) Realized $105.75

- Russellville, KY - Southern Bank of Kentucky, Branch at Russellville $2 Oct. 4, 1859 KY-285 G12 SENC, Hughes 735var. PCGS Very Fine 20. Another genuine issued note from Kentucky, and extremely pleasing. The imprint is American Bank Note Company, though the vignettes used are from the earlier Toppan, Carpenter, Casilear & Co. catalog. The attractive layout features a youngster holding the reins of a horse next to harvesters at the lower right. At the far left is Union with a standing female adjacent to the titled column. A small female portrait is at the left of the arced two-line title. Solid, bright and well margined. The vast majority of these issued branch bills were redeemed, thus this a great rarity. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society, Heritage Auctions Internet Sale (5/2016). (Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions, ha.com.) Realized $329.00

- Princeton, KY - Farmers Bank of Kentucky, Branch at Princeton $5 Oct. 1, 1856 KY-100 G152a SENC, Hughes 256var. PCGS Very Fine 25 Apparent. This is a great rarity from the Frankfort-based bank and payable at its branch in Princeton. This note is fully genuine, engraved and printed by Toppan, Carpenter, Casilear & Co. At the top center are some cattle and pigs in various states of moving along or resting, but the herders are behind coaxing their charges. Counters are in all corners, and ends show central portraits: a male at left and female at the right. A red protector FIVE is at the bottom. Signed and beautifully accomplished. Noted with some minor "Edge Tears." This design type was heavily counterfeited, and the survival of a genuine note of the style is a miracle. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society, Heritage Auctions Internet Sale (5/2016). (Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions, ha.com.) Realized $235.00
