- Christian County, (KY) - Stephen Stuart-Stuart's Debenture 12-1/2 Cents or Nine Pence August 10, 1816 Hughes 115. PCGS Very Fine 20 Apparent. A fascinating and early scrip note rarity with a dual denomination. It is not only a Spanish system "Bit" note or 12-1/2 cents, it is also an English equivalent of NINE PENCE, seen at the right end. Obligations, location, date, and denominations are enclosed within an ornamental border. A strong signature of Stephen Stuart is at the lower right, and serial number 4 is at the upper right. This is the only example we have seen, and it is the Hughes Plate note illustrated on page 31. The note was sold in the Lyn Knight 2002 St. Louis Sale, lot 2125, where it was purchased by Herb and Martha Schingoethe. There are "Tape Repaired Splits" noted, observed from the blank back and not affecting the face eye appeal. This is an intriguing scrip note with an impressive pedigree chain. Ex: R. M.
