- Dubuque, Iowa Territory - Miners Bank of Dubuque-Iowa Lead Mines payable at the Mechanics & Traders Bank, Cincinnati $5 18_ IA-5 G2, Oakes 58-1. Remainder. PCGS Extremely Fine 45 Apparent. The first of three denominations from this rare series of unissued remainder notes, payable in Cincinnati, engraved and printed by the Western Bank Note & Co./Woodruff, Tucker & Co. We have seen very few notes from the series, and none were signed and issued. The titles are complex and the layout lively. A charming steamboat scene is at the top center. End panels have different classical cameo profiles in between counters. Like the other denominations, very attractively designed. The Tom Flynn Collection example in our September 2008 Long Beach sale realized a resounding $2,990 as a raw note graded About Uncirculated with a corner restoration. This is noted with "Hinge Repaired Tears; Mounting Remnants on Back," but faces up beautifully. A significant Dubuque rarity. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society, Heritage Auctions Internet Sale (5/2016). (Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions, ha.com.) Realized $2820.00

- Dubuque, Wisconsin Ter. - Miners Bank $100 Oakes 57-6, WI-125 G10. Remainder. PCGS Very Fine 35. This rare and unusual note from Dubuque is from the period when it was part of the enormous Wisconsin Territory (1836 to 1848). This territory included present-day Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa and part of the Dakotas. The note is referenced under two states, Wisconsin and Iowa, but geographically, we consider this an Iowa note. Eric kept this note in his Iowa book. Tom Flynn, a native of Dubuque, owned the only $50-$100 post note sheet from this series we have seen. It sold for $9,775 in is his groundbreaking sale in September 2008. Printed about 1840, this Rawdon, Wright & Hatch engraved note is oversize compared with most demand notes of the period. At the top center are Mercury and seated Moneta. At the lower left is seated Plenty, and at the lower right, a Native American hunter drawing a bow. A bright example and an intriguing territorial designation type. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society, Heritage Auctions Internet Sale (5/2016). (Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions, ha.com.) Realized $3525.00

- Dubuque, IA - Dubuque & Sioux City Rail Road Co. $1 1866 Oakes 52-1. PCGS Fine 12 Apparent. The second denomination from this rare railroad company series issued from Dubuque and lithographed by Edward Mendel, Chicago. The note was GOOD FOR FREIGHT OR FARE as specified in the top border. Vignettes adapted from engraved Obsolete banknotes of the period include a locomotive and cars at the right end, under the curve of the long title, and a lower left corner vignette of a woman feeding a horse (the scale seems unusual). Inside the left center is a large red "1" protector, and the upper left die has a color surround. The 1866 date above the title is clear and the note has the correct signatures for the time period. Prior to the Newman Collection sales, we had handled only three notes from the series, and one was damaged. The denomination was not in the Tom Flynn Collection (Flynn strove to obtain all the rarities of Dubuque, his hometown). The $3 denomination from the Newman Collection graded Fine 15 Apparent saw furious bidding in the October 2015 sale and realized $4,935. The only $1 note from the series we handled sold for $1,495 at the 2007 St. Louis CSNS sale in "Raw Fine." This note is superior to that example. Noted as "Hole Punch Cancelled" through the signatures and "Tape Repaired Edge Tear at UL." An important Iowa rarity. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society, Heritage Auctions Internet Sale (5/2016). (Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions, ha.com.) Realized $2232.50

- Burlington, IA - Merchant's Insurance Co. & Burlington Savings Bank $1 June 1, 1857 Oakes 15-1. PCGS Fine 15 Apparent. This is a great rarity, engraved and printed using a banknote style by Rawdon, Wright, Hatch, & Edson. This is another issuer that Jim Haxby, using his criteria, did not list as a bank, but could have justifiably included. At the top center is a small oval portrait of Washington wrapped within the lengthy titles. At the left end is standing Justice. At the right end is standing Athena. A red protector ONE is at the bottom center. Prior to the Newman Collection example offered here, we have only one auction record of this issuer and denomination, a raw Good example we sold at the 2007 St. Louis sale. Noted with "HPC; Missing UL Corner Tip; Edge and Internal Tears; Hinge and Mounting Remnants on Back." Iowa notes are well collected, and this was reflected in active bidding at both the Newman Part VI sale in April 2015 and the Part VII sale in October 2015. The Newman Collection $3 note from this series, PCGS Fine 15 Apparent, realized $2,115 in the latter sale. The presence of some faults in no way overshadows the great rarity of this Iowa note. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society, Heritage Auctions Internet Sale (5/2016). (Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions, ha.com.) Realized $646.25
