- Lebanon, IN - Boone County Bank $1 Oct. 1, 1860 IN-330 G2, WVS 416-1. PCGS Extremely Fine 40. This is an interesting series of notes from a bank that came up with an excellent ploy for issuing fraudulent notes. They decided to have the New York Bank Note Co., 50 Wall St. (W. L. Ormsby) deliver most of their printed notes directly to the bank officers and not the state as required by law. They applied false auditor signatures and circulated most of those notes, yielding a handy profit. This is a handsomely designed series. The Native American family in the center was a popular vignette from this engraver. At the bottom left is an allegorical figure representing Mechanics. A well-margined and vibrant example. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society, Heritage Auctions Internet Sale (5/2016). (Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions, ha.com.) Realized $64.00

- Lafayette, IN - Merchants' Bank $5 December 15, 1852 IN-310 G6, WVS 358-3. PCGS Fine 12 Apparent. The bank failed in 1855, yet the state was still able to redeem notes at 90 cents on the dollar, which was remarkable in that period. An impressive train vignette is at top center, finely engraved by Danforth, Bald & Co. At the lower right is an oval vignette of dogs chasing birds under a tree. Difficult to see is a noted "Small Internal Slit at Right." Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society, Heritage Auctions Internet Sale (5/2016). (Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions, ha.com.) Realized $79.00

- Indianapolis, IN - Bank of the Capitol $5 April 1, 1854 IN-235 G2a, WVS 276-2. PCGS Very Good 10 Apparent. Like many Indiana institutions, this was a short-lived bank, lasting just three years. Interestingly, the state reported no outstanding notes, yet a few still exist, like this rarity. The very popular five silver dollars and five cherubs vignette at the top center is from the Rawdon, Wright, Hatch & Edson catalog. A male portrait is at the left, and an ornate "5" with five allegorical females is at the bottom right corner. A pair of unusual blue shaded "5" protectors is at the bottom. This denomination was not included in the comprehensive Stack Collection coin vignetted auction in January 2008. Solid example with noted "Mounting Remnants and Scuffs; Hinges on Back." Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society, Heritage Auctions Internet Sale (5/2016). (Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions, ha.com.) Realized $199.75

- Huntington, IN - Huntington County Bank $5 Aug. 1, 1856 IN-230 G2a, WVS 270-1 PCGS Fine 12 Apparent. An extremely rare Indiana note issued by a bank that apparently redeemed most of their circulation and left funds with the state to redeem notes after officially closing. This example is the Indiana book plate note illustrated on page 88. This well-designed Toppan, Carpenter, Casilear & Co. engraving shows a top center canal boat scene with a train crossing a stone bridge. At the far left is a female portrait and at the lower right is the Indiana seal. "Tape on Back" is noted, and there is some resulting vertical staining on the face. The first we have cataloged. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society, Heritage Auctions Internet Sale (5/2016). (Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions, ha.com.) Realized $376.00
