- Savannah, GA - Bank of the State of Georgia, Bank at Savannah $1 Aug. 1, 1816 GA-330 G10 SENC. PCGS Fine 12 Apparent. A simple looking note that is an extreme rarity and only the second we have seen. Printed by Murray, Draper, Fairman & Co. with text and titles in the center, intricate end panels and oval counters at the top. Fully signed and issued. The early notes were probably replaced by later notes from the bank making its survival unlikely. This is much superior the other we sold earlier this year at the Tampa 2016 FUN auction. That note had pieces missing and was backed. This is well printed. Grading notes a "Missing LL Corner; Edges Reinforced; Hinges on Back." A great opportunity for Georgia specialists to obtain a historic rarity. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society, Heritage Auctions Internet Sale (5/2016). (Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions, ha.com.) Realized $881.25

- Savannah, GA - Bank of Savannah $50 18__ GA-325 G22. Proof. PCGS About New 50 Apparent. A rare India paper mounted on card proof from this Toppan, Carpenter, Casilear & Co. series. At center is a female portrait under the arced title and cupped into FIFTY DOLLARS below. A male portrait is at the left, and a large vignette of Washington on horseback is at the right end. Noted as being "Severed at Left," with "Edge Tears and Damage" and also "Mounted on Cardstock" as made. Despite the flaws to the India paper, this rare proof still faces up well. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society, Heritage Auctions Internet Sale (5/2016). (Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions, ha.com.) Realized $258.50

- Savannah, GA - Planters Bank of the State of Georgia $10 May 7, 1816 Contemporary Counterfeit GA-320 C32. PCGS Very Fine 30. A very scarce and early dated contemporary counterfeit that roughly imitated the genuine Leney & Rollinson plate. We have never seen the genuine note, whether issued or as a proof. In a crude style with an eagle at top center. The end panels are very rough imitations of the genuine imprint's finely engraved moir? patterns. A very high-grade example of this note, and the finest of the few we have encountered. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society, Heritage Auctions Internet Sale (5/2016). (Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions, ha.com.) Realized $188.00

- Savannah, GA - Marine Bank of Georgia $2 Dec. 1, 1860 GA-295 G4b. PCGS Fine 15. This is a scarcer Georgia series and in superior grade for the type. Finely engraved by Danforth, Wright & Co. with an "ABC" monogram type and a vermillion color back. At the bottom center is a rare portrait of Protestant evangelist George Whitfield. He found religious freedom in Georgia after difficulties in England, and preached in several colonies. He died in 1770 while preaching in Newburyport, Massachusetts. At the left are two sailors stranded on shore, one seated and the other standing with a scope, hoping for rescue (note the anchor on shore). The right end has Durand patent security strips and the title perpendicular on a lathe work strip at the far right. The bank building and title are in the center of the colorful back. The note is a perfect Fine note, with clean and excellent color on the back, which is rarely seen on this series. When encountered, notes from the series usually have some damage. This should be classified as a "sleeper" rarity and specialists will recognize that fact. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society, Heritage Auctions Internet Sale (5/2016). (Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions, ha.com.) Realized $376.00
