The top center is dominated by a wide die with TWO in the center. Bottom corner vignettes show a slave with cotton basket at lower left, and seated Plenty at lower right. Faint handling only. Realistically portrayed American workers actively pursue, from left to right, sheep shearing, logging and corn harvesting. All three interlocked vignettes are characteristic of this imprint's style. - Dalton, GA - Bank of Whitfield $1 Aug. 1, 1862 GA-155 G22. PCGS Very Fine 25 Apparent. This title converted from the Planters and Mechanics Bank, and the notes were mostly worthless. This is a scarce Civil War emergency note issue and faces up very brightly. It shows a train at top center, red ONE DOLLAR protector and two "1" protectors at the top. End panels have a perpendicular ONE, each styled differently. Noted is a hard to see "Small Edge Tear at Right." Ex: Eric P. At the bottom center is a wonderfully life-like fox-hunting scene, with the hunted virtually cornered. A seated farmer is at the upper left, and Washington at the upper right. It has the perpendicular "CLINTON" black ink stamp at the right as often seen on this type. Well margined and sharply printed. A lovely and popular type. Ex: Eric P. Ormsby engraved series from this bank is significantly rarer than the Draper, Welsh & Co. notes, and this note is SENC in Haxby. A trio of face vignettes shows Agriculture at the center, a seated allegorical female at the upper left and standing Agriculture at the far right. There is a trio of "3" dies. The orange security back has three intersecting circles. The back has been overprinted with a perpendicular advertisement for Dr. Taylor's Olive Branch Bitters, Philadelphia. The Dorris Collection note, without an advertising back, realized $2,530.00 in our 2015 FUN auction.
