- Alexandria, DC - Corporation of Alexandria $1 July 1, 1825. PCGS Very Good 10 Apparent. A very rare and early Alexandria Corporation issue printed by Murray, Draper, Fairman & Co. The fact that it was not present in the Julian Leidman Collection sale (McLaughlin & Robinson, April 20, 1985) attests to its rarity. This simple engraved note has intricate end panels, typeset text in the center and two counters. Noted with "Tape on Back; Edge Tear at UL." This rarity faces up quite well. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society, Heritage Auctions Internet Sale (5/2016). (Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions, ha.com.) Realized $1057.50

The counters in the corners of this Danforth, Bald & Co. $1 type are well placed and deceptive. - Wilmington, DE - Bank of Wilmington & Brandywine $5 Nov. 4, 1839 Contemporary Counterfeit DE-85 C56. PCGS Very Fine 20 Apparent. This is the sharpest printed example of this historically vignetted note we have seen. Though a contemporary counterfeit, the plate is well made. It copies the Underwood, Bald, Spencer & Hufty original, which is known only as a proof (there was one example in the 1990 American Banknote Company Archive sale). At top center, Columbus raises his sword aloft upon landfall. The left end shows a tall standing female in classical dress, and at lower right Justice is seen with an oval portrait of Washington. Noted are some hard to see and trivial "Edge Tears." Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society, Heritage Auctions Internet Sale (5/2016). (Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions, ha.com.) Realized $79.00

- Wilmington, DE - Union Bank of Delaware $20 March 16, 1855 DE-80-UNL. PCGS Very Fine 20 Apparent. A very unusual note which poses a bit of mystery. It is clearly a false note from the period, with a crooked title and crude city block at the upper left indicating it is an altered bill. However, it is not from an altered source that we readily can identify. The style is Pennsylvanian, with seated Commerce at top and identical Athena vignettes at each end, all engraved by Underwood, Bald, Spencer & Hufty. Noted flaws include "Severed and Repaired at Right; Small Repaired Tear at Left; Pinholes." A fascinating note and worth further study. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society, Heritage Auctions Internet Sale (5/2016). (Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions, ha.com.) Realized $211.50
