- North Carolina April 2, 1776 $1/4 Three Fish Fr. NC-155b. PCGS Fine 15 Apparent. An attractive example of a rarely seen type, with one of eight different vignettes for the denomination. The bottom is trimmed slightly, and the lowest fish is only partially visible. The other three margins are excellent. Noted are "Splits and Repairs; Backed." We have cataloged only one other. That example from the Kings Mountain Collection might be the finest, PCGS Extremely Fine 40, and realized $1,840 at our 2011 Long Beach auction. This is very collectible and appealing. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society, Heritage Auctions Internet Sale (5/2016). (Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions, ha.com.) Realized $763.75

- North Carolina April 2, 1776 $1/8 Sculpin Fr. NC-154f. PCGS Very Fine 30 Apparent. Another rare $1/8 type and with an exceptionally sharp sculpin vignette. Noted with "Repaired Split at Center; Minor Stains." This is vastly superior to the other two we have cataloged and with more appeal than the Boyd Collection note. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society, Heritage Auctions Internet Sale (5/2016). (Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions, ha.com.) Realized $1175.00

- North Carolina April 2, 1776 $1/8 Dog Fr. NC-154a. PCGS Fine 15 Apparent. All the $1/8 notes, showing eight different vignette styles, are difficult to find in any grade. This is quite appealing from the face and well margined all around. The vignette is strongly defined. Noted with "Edge Splits and Tears; Hinge Repairs on Back; Minor Stains." Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society, Heritage Auctions Internet Sale (5/2016). (Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions, ha.com.) Realized $493.50

- North Carolina April 2, 1776 $1/16 Nautilus Fr. NC-153e. PCGS Fine 12 Apparent. This is another rare $1/16 vignette type from the series and rarely encountered in any grade. The vignette is very sharply printed and exhibits strong detail. However, the delicate paper was brittle and some edges have chipped off. Noted with "Splits, Tears, and Damage; Missing Pieces; Stains; Backed." This is the first of the type we have cataloged. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society, Heritage Auctions Internet Sale (5/2016). (Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions, ha.com.) Realized $646.25

- North Carolina April 2, 1776 $1/16 Butterfly Fr. NC-153b. PCGS Very Good 10 Apparent. The April 2, 1776 "at Halifax" issue is among the most interesting of the Colonial notes. There are 56 distinct vignette types (seen at the lower left of each note), ranging from $1/16 to $20 denominations, and all of them merit consideration and further study. Certain types appear on different varieties of paper, depending upon what was available at the time of printing. Completion of all 56 types is an impressive task, and Eric P. Newman is one of the few to have achieved this meritorious set. We are not aware of high-grade notes of many vignette types, especially among the lesser denominations; the fragile paper often used and tight margining subjected many to the small nicks and flaws we see today. The six different $1/16 notes are all among the most difficult of the denominations to find in choice grades. The butterfly is rarely encountered in any condition, but this is an attractive example overall. Noted are "Splits and Tears; Center Split Sewn Together; Backed." This is a very collectible example. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society, Heritage Auctions Internet Sale (5/2016). (Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions, ha.com.) Realized $881.25
