- (Connecticut) Hartford & New Haven Turnpike Gate No. "1" Undated (Ca. 1799) 4 Cents Newman page 117. PCGS About New 53. This is from an intriguing series of thick paper notes printed from copper plates engraved by Amos Doolittle. The notes have been collected by Colonial as well as Obsolete Currency collectors, particularly those interested in unusual denominations (the use of "Mills" is also encountered on this series). Printed in all blue, and much scarcer than the notes printed in black ink. The charming rebus indicates passage for one horse and rider alongside the text, "& empty Hors Cart." The left end panel has an unusual artistic treatment. Signed by Jas. Hillhouse. Very scarce, and this is a sharp example with very minor handling. We sold a blue 6 Cents 3 Mills graded PCGS Choice About New 58 for $2,232.50 in Newman Internet 1. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society, Heritage Auctions Internet Sale (1/2017). (Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions, ha.com.) Realized $2115.00.
