- Green Bay, WI - Bank of Wisconsin $50 Nov. 1, 1836 WI-245 G14. PCGS Fine 15 Apparent. This 1830s bank had a large circulation and went broke, like many Midwestern banks of the period, leaving many notes behind. However, the $50 note from the issuer is quite rare. The series featured a Rawdon, Wright & Hatch custom vignette of The Treaty of Prairie Du Chien engraved for this bank. Flanked by "50" dies, the intricate scene upper left shows the American officers' tents at left, with guards stationed nearby. Some Native Americans appear in the foreground, but most are seated cooperatively in the background. At upper right are Mercury and seated Commerce. An interesting Chicago broker's notation is on the left circular vignette. Noted are: "Small Repaired Edge Tear at LL; Mounting Remnants on Back." We have handled only two $50 notes from the series; the last, in 2009, realized $1,150 graded raw Fine. This note is much superior to that example. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society, Heritage Auctions Internet Sale (1/2017). (Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions, ha.com.) Realized $282.00.

- Waynesboro, VA - John B. Smith $1 Sep. 2, 1861 Jones & Littlefield PW20-09. PCGS Fine 12 Apparent. This issuer seems rarer than listed. A counter is at top center above the title and denomination. The ornamental left end panel shows the denomination once perpendicular and four times from top to bottom. At right, a charming vignette of a man carrying a bindle stick is between counters. "Edge Tears" and "Minor Mounting Remnants on Back" are noted by PCGS, but it is pleasing from the face. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society, Heritage Auctions Internet Sale (1/2017). (Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions, ha.com.) Realized $69.00.

Noted by grading are: "Small Holes at UL; Small Edge and Internal Splits and Tears." Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society, Heritage Auctions Internet Sale (1/2017). - Salt Lake City, UT - General Tithing Store House 5 Cents 18__ Rust 231, Nyholm 299. PCGS Very Good 10. This series is perhaps the most technical in the entire Mormon currency canon. An interesting and scarcer sub-variety from the "Tithing House" series. This Meat note was lithographed on salmon paper by Gast St. L. N.Y. S.F. in the same style as other notes in the series. The curving title across at upper left is over the central emblem with textual outlined denomination. The denomination as ".05?" is seen on the counter at upper right. A beehive is at the lower left. The Mormon Tabernacle is depicted on the back. The sharply stamped violet "PRODUCE" stamping is at the lower right on the face and upper right on the back. The stamped date is partially unclear, but is likely Sept. 30, 1883, which matches up with the Rust plate note. The printing is very well detailed and solid for the assigned grade. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society, Heritage Auctions Internet Sale (1/2017). (Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions, ha.com.) Realized $517.00.
