- Provo, UT - Provo Woolen Mills Company 10 Cents in Woolen Goods at Retail May 22, 1896 Rust 190, Nyholm 252. PCGS Very Good 10 Apparent. A clearly signed and issued note from this rare series. A decorative border is around the perimeter. The title is in white on gray shading. The textual FIFTY CENTS denomination is outlined in a decorative cartouche in the center. One small "10 cts." counter is at the right. The obligation is payable "In Woolen Goods at Retail." The secretary's signature is at the bottom. Noted only with some "Tape Repaired Splits." - Memphis, TN - Farmers and Merchants Bank of Memphis $20 Feb. 20, 1854 TN-100 G60a, Garland 656. PCGS Choice New 63. The paper for this series is clearly watermarked "T.C.C. & Co." The head of the allegorical female at top center interrupts the arcing STATE OF TENNESSEE. Oval portraits of Washington are flanking, and transportation vignettes are at the ends between "20" blocks. - Memphis, TN - Farmers and Merchants Bank of Memphis $10 Aug. 1, 1854 TN-100 G58c, Garland 653. PCGS Very Fine 30 Apparent. If you study the bank's notes closely, you will notice punctuation variants and sub-series varieties. This late $10 falls into its own series with an engraved "1st Aug. 1854" and was once a rare type. A steamboat billowing smoke is at top center, Liberty and an eagle are at the left, and a young lady twirling her hair is at the right. Rawdon, Wright, Hatch & Edson designed this layout. - Columbia, TN - Chaffin, Kirk & Co. on Union Bank of Tennessee 50 Cents 1837 Garland 260. Remainder. PCGS Extremely Fine 40. This is from an unusual series of private exchange notes for Chaffin, Kirk & Co. and defined as "checks" that were payable in "Tennessee or Alabama Bank Notes." The interesting Draper, Toppan, Longacre & Co. vignette at top center shows Agriculture and a young girl as a mechanic with a background of field hands at left and a mill scene at right. An eagle is atop the stars and stripes shield, and an anchor is at top left. An allegorical female, as Commerce and Plenty, rests with a cherub in a large "V." This crude counterfeit with the Toppan, Carpenter & Co. imprint shows an eagle at the top, Union at lower left, and a finely dressed woman at right. An early note from the imprint of Lafoureade, Printer, 159, N. 3d st. A sheaf of wheat is between the "12 ? Cents." and the serial number.
