- Rensselaer, IN - Farmers and Mechanics Bank $2 Mar. 1, 1854 IN-245 G24a, WVS 697-2. PCGS Very Fine 25 Apparent. This is a tough to find bank, and most notes known are low grade. As on the Logansport Insurance Company $2 above, men are at the harvest using grain cradles at the center, and a detail from Pat Lyon at the Forge is at the left. - Lebanon, IN - Boone County Bank $20 Apr. 2, 1860 IN-330 G12, WVS 416-6. PCGS Very Fine 25 Apparent. This distinctively engraved W. L. Ormsby vignette shows a pair of allegorical females who are mirror images of each other. They face away from one another and lean elbow-to-elbow on a tree trunk. The imprint of the New York Bank Note Company is below the location at the bottom. "Stained," as noted by grading. Ex: Eric P. - Edwardsville, IL - Exchange Bank of Illinois 37-1/2 Cents "on demand, at our Banking-House" Feb. 4, 1820 Haxby-UNL. PCGS Very Fine 25. This is an intriguing and very early Illinois remainder note, and thus an important piece of Illinois banking history. This seems like a bank to us, and the obligation bears that out. The Bank of Edwardsville was opened in 1818 and also issued cashier change bills. The size format is identical to Philadelphia style change notes of the era, but this is simple and has no imprint. Typeset within linear frames; the ends show ornamental cartouches with the denomination written left and ILLINOIS right. There is space for one signature, like that of a cashier. The 50 cents note from this issue sold for $493.50 in Newman Part VII, October 2015. This is very rare and significant. Ex: Eric P. - Macon, GA - John B. Ross, Wm. A. Ross, Benj. F. Ross, and James M. Jones - Pay to Ross and Company $20.76 April 18, 1848. PCGS Very Fine 30 Apparent. This is an unusual "One Day after" post note issued by three Rosses and James M. Jones. The names of the proprietors are listed in the left end and the imprint of B.F. Griffin is seen at the bottom. Printed on white paper. An interesting intertwining script monogram (LL) is at the lower right. The history of this piece is unclear, but the Ross family members here appear to be Macon merchants (some buried in Rose Hill Cemetery, Macon) and not relations to Chief John Ross, signer of Indian Nation fiscal forms. All are visually bright and in above average condition. $1 March 16, 1863. PCGS Very Good 10 Apparent. The Battle of Lexington is depicted below the arced location and date, and Liberty is at the lower right. Grading notes a "Small Hole at Bottom Center" and "Hinges on Back." $2 March 16, 1863. PCGS Fine 15 Apparent. Vignettes show allegorical females. Grading notes "Tape on Back." $3 March 16, 1863. PCGS Fine 15. A slave carries a basket full of cotton on his shoulder above the denomination block at the left end, a sidewheel steamer is at the top, and an allegorical representation of Commerce is at the right. PCGS Very Fine 25. The red border, title, and denomination stand out on this certificate of deposit. Vignettes are in cartouches. At left, a woman with a fancy hat; at top center, a traveling train. $2 Dec. 9, 1861. PCGS Very Fine 20. Similar; the border, title, and denomination are in red, and the vignettes are in cartouches. The train is now perpendicular at the left end, and ships at sail are at top center. $3 Dec. 9, 1861. PCGS Very Fine 20 Apparent. The red elements are as previous: border, title, and denomination. Vignettes are not in cartouches. A tall Native American princess occupies the left end panel. At top center, unusual implements include a ladder and long hooks (early fire fighting gear) Grading notes: "Mounting Remnants on Back; Small Hole at Left." $4 Dec. 9, 1861. PCGS Very Fine 30.
