Decatur, AL - Branch of the Bank of the State of Alabama at Decatur $4 Jan. 8, 1835 AL-5 G62a SENC Rosene 2-9. PCGS Fine 15. A rare issued note and odd denomination from a State Bank with several branches. The home bank was located in Cahawba. The face of this Rawdon, Wright & Hatch note features vignettes in the allegorical style: top center, a supported shield with "4"; left, an early steamboat; right end, a seated and youthful Vulcan. The back is important, with full branch DECATUR outlined within a rich orange tint. This is an early usage of color backs, which were quite costly to produce and thus used by few banks. The Rosene Rarity-6 rating seems conservative by that reference. In the landmark Walter B. Jones Alabama Sale cataloged and sold by us in September 2001 there were no issued Decatur branch notes of any denomination; only a few face proofs were included. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society. Realized $2,232.50. Newman VI (Heritage Auctions, 4/2015), lot 19001. Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions.
