Early Paper Money of America (NNP Edition)|The Essex Bank was incorporated on June 18, 1799 to operate in Salem with an authorized capital from $100,000 to $400,000. Its debts including bank notes could not exceed twice its capital plus its specie deposits. Notes below $5 were prohibited.
